    Post-boiler service noise

On 'Nut' might not be the right word. It's this thing:

    Post-boiler service noise

I've just realised the last post I made on DIYNot was last September after the previous boiler service, when the plumber left a nut above the boiler loose and water poured out when the time switch came on. It was the same plumber. Maybe I'm a bit too forgiving.

    Post-boiler service noise

Thanks Dan, all working now and much quieter :). The plumber was in and out very quickly so he likely had several more services to do before he could clock off.

    Post-boiler service noise

The boiler man did the annual service this afternoon. At 5:30pm the hot water switched on and the whole system was much noisier than usual. The noise didn't seem to be coming from any one place. Also, the pilot light in the boiler was off and it took several attempts to ignite it. I've noticed...

    Aftermath of boiler service

Thanks for the answers gents, I'll get a wrench and give it a cautious tightening.

    Aftermath of boiler service

The plumber came round to service the boiler, which is in the outside WC. A few hours afterwards the timer switched the boiler on and water came deluging into the WC apparently from the boiler. It turned out the water was coming from behind a nut above the boiler, see arrow in photo. I don't...

    Broken cistern

Thanks everyone for these replies. John, it looks like the cistern is locked to the pan by two bolts: I can't see any connections looking into the inside of the cistern so presumably there are two lugs or something on the base with a thread to receive a bolt. Hopefully the width...

    Broken cistern

I have a toilet with a 9 litre cistern. It has developed a crack: It leaks about four pints of water overnight which is pretty bad and I have learned from other posts it could disintegrate at any time, deluging house and home. I know either the cistern or the whole toilet have to be...

    Painting stained wallpaper

Joe, I have an aversion to using oil-based paints because of the complications of cleaning brushes and rollers, and the risk to carpets. I notice Dulux sell both oil and water based 'stain blockers'. Is there any reason I can't use a water based one?

    Painting stained wallpaper

A leaky upstairs radiator valve has caused black staining on the wallpaper in the room below: All is now dried out and ready for redecoration. I was going to repaper but I've found the existing (embossed) wallpaper is marked as paintable. My question is, can I paint over that level of...

    Vitrolite bath panel

The side panel on my bath is like a sheet of black glass. A builder friend has told me it is called Vitrolite, made at one time by Pilkingtons but no longer available. At least one of the Mersey tunnels used to be lined with it, he says. The panel has a fracture in it. I could ignore the...

    Baking lampholders

That Wiki link says these cables are susceptible to corrosion by urine. I won't ask how that came to be known

    Baking lampholders

I don't know what you mean by 'Pyro' or 'T/E'. Are you saying a brass lampholder doesn't need to be earthed? If it does need to be earthed I'm stuck with the plastic ones as my lighting circuits have no earth connections. I checked the markings on the lampholders I have mentioned. They are...

    Baking lampholders

I've seen these. But the pack always has 'half inch fitting' or 'half inch thread', implying they are a non-standard or obsolete fitting. Can I use these as a direct replacement?
