Transformation of a block of flats into a single dwelling ho

Auction wrote "Do you think that a block of 10 flats or maybe 100 flats will become a single dwelling house only because we have evicted all the tenants except one" "WE have evicted" Big clue to Auctions interest in this matter, methinks. No disrespect to any posters on this topic, but I...

    fencing post problem.

If it's only 3 " down, why not bolt a metpost base directly onto this concrete? You could do some exploratory drilling to see how thick the concrete is first, but if it IS over a drain as you suspect then it's likely to be fairly thick. How deep are the drains in the inspection chamber?

extending a garden tap to end of garden

For a normal outside tap on a domestic property then a 15mm hose is all you'll need. A larger hose is obviously capable of supplying a larger volume of water BUT if most of your internal pipework in your house is 15mm then putting a blxxdy great hose on the end of it won't make much difference...

Building a greenhouse from recycled materials

OP wrote "I want to try my hand at a well insulated greenhouse for year round growing" The biggest problem you'll have with this concept are winter light levels. No matter how well insulated your 'greenhouse' is, there simply isn't enough energy from the sun to get things to grow much in the...

Rules on removing tree (which hang over pavement)

Hi rajeshk4u, 1. If you contact the tree officer at your local council, he/she will most likely be able to tell you if there is a TPO on it. Some people worry about contacting a tree officer as it draws attention to the tree and they are worried that a TPO will then be put on it. Is it a good...

Replacing conservatory and ? Knocking through

Interesting to see how some people think the guide price is reasonable, others think it's excessive. Maybe it depends where you live. I'm on the South Coast, and I always smile when Kirsty Allsop on Location Location Location breathlessly tells some young couple in the Midlands or the North...

    Shipping container

You'd be better off getting a site cabin rather than a shipping container. If you get what is called an 'anti-vandal' type then it will have a steel shell and be virtually indestructible, and it will already be fitted out with windows, insulation and electrics etc. A decent 20' or 24' cabin will...

Looking for ideas (DIY Green house)

Unless you want something deliberately a bit 'different' I strongly suggest that you simply look in the local ads or on ebay or Gumtree for a secondhand aluminium greenhouse. As long as the structure is undamaged it's fine, and don't worry if a few panes of glass are missing or dirty as these...

    water pipes - size advice

Hi stev You don't say what the existing pipe is made of. Is it metal or plastic? If it's a plastic pipe similar to the MDPE pipe you posted a picture of, then it might be old pipe which was made in Imperial sizes also, which is why you can't match it up. If you can get something to fit the...

    Tree irrigation

Easy - buy a couple of standard plastic buckets, preferably in dark green or black so they aren't an eyesore. Dig a bucket sized hole in two areas where you still have open soil , if possible one either side of the tree. Then drill a single small hole (maybe 5mm) at the bottom of each bucket...

Electric retractable awning - caution if you're buying one!

I was advised that these can be unreliable. Anyone got experience of one of these?

Electric retractable awning - caution if you're buying one!

Hello folks Had a new Luxaflex retractable awning installed a few weeks ago. It's 3.5 wide and extends to 2.6m. Electric motor internally with remote control for extending and retracting, so not cheap. Two nights ago we had sudden heavy rain, which was not forecast for this area. Sods law...

    Lleylandi Roots

I think the chances of this being successful are pretty low! You really will need to take out all the large roots/stumps before you put in a foundation for your wall, and this clearance work will inevitably bugger up your driveways. Maybe a better bet would be to cut the stumps to ground...

Using a cement dye when grouting sandstone slabs - advice?

Thanks for your advice guys. r896neo, are these premixes or resins easier to apply? I would have hoped to find a product that could be applied in a similar way to a mastic gun would make life a bit easier. I have read the paving expert page but he cautions against the cost of these products...

Using a cement dye when grouting sandstone slabs - advice?

Hello folks Have almost finished laying quite a large patio (30m2) using 22mm Strata sandstone grey slabs. I'm thinking a darker cement for grouting will look better than plain cement. If I use a cement dye I assume the cement could then stain the slab edges very easily if any of the mix gets...

Need some electric or petrol lawnmower recommendations

I know you wanted a mower without a pull start, but I have a Lawnflite 3.8hp 18" which is pull start but is extremely easy to use, usually starts first time every time. We've had it for 6-7 years and it still starts extremely easily even after being left in the shed overwinter. Never had a...

Traffic noise reduction - which type of fence?

I see this topic is still generating interest, so here's an update. The 2.4m high fencing was erected to spec in November and as shown on the diagrams previously posted. The contractors made a decent job of it. There was 80m of fencing plus some double gates and it came to a bit over £8K inc...

    Compacting type 1 sub-base

I did this fairly recently - I assume you're talking about a tracked mini digger? It depends on what you've already laid down - I had about 100mm depth of 40 mm stone ('rejects' or 'land base') laid on top of membrane, then about 75mm of Type 1 laid on top of that. (This was all on top of heavy...

    Buying/Borrowing/Leasing overgrown land

I feel sorry for you being put in this position. I think you're more likely to have success if you can get together with other like-minded neighbours (if there are any!) and then apply pressure to encourage the housing association to allow you to use the site for allotments or a community...

Where to buy greenhouse glass sheets?

Just shop around before you buy the glass - prices can vary widely. The standard sized sheet is old imperial size 24"x24" and as kbdiy says it's 3mm thick, but check the measurements of your greenhouse carefully and if necessary get it cut to size by the glazing merchant, remembering to make it...
