House insurance that covers DIY issues

I think that would count as "accidental damage" for which there is usually an additional (slightly more expensive) premium. Check your mate's policy small print as self-inflicted damage may not be covered.

Trying to move a radiator, but....

I agree, it ain't broke, but it's in the way of my hallway  for some reason it was put on the right hand wall opposite the stairs (making it a narrow passageway), when there's loads of room on the opposite wall.

Trying to move a radiator, but....

Although I appreciate that's a better system, wouldn't it be possible just to keep this one on the single pipe (as it's the only rad which seems to be configured that way) and just run the new piping as below (excuse my crap paint skills  ) : I think ripping up more floorboards...

Trying to move a radiator, but....

Hi Paul, cheers for the reply. It's weird, but in most other radiators in the house (ie, all the ones I've checked) there are two pipes. There is also a seperate flow and return pipe coming down from the boiler. Is it possible that this one is the only single pipe rad on the system?

Trying to move a radiator, but....

Hi All, I've got a radiator in my hallway which I'd like to move to the opposite wall, but the way it's plumbed seems really unusual. Other radiators I have have a main flow and return pipe, with a T-junction off both for the pipe to the radiator, but on this one the pipes both come off the...

    Support brackets in loft

Cheers. I'll probably want to make it a liveable room at some stage, but before that I have to redecorate every room (inc 2 bathrooms, central heating replacement, kitchen, probably build a summerhouse etc...). I guess to do that I'll need to put RSJs in and build a floor on top of them...

    Support brackets in loft

Reckon you're right... the house was extended about 30 years ago and the walls upstairs are almost all plasterboard, so makes perfect sense that this is reinforcement for a brick wall which was removed. Out of interest, is there any way I can replace them for something lower profile? Or is...

    Support brackets in loft

Hi, just wanted to know if someone could let me know what the brackets in my loft are for? I've recently bought a house and would like to board the floor of the loft out (once the CH and electrics have been done), but these brackets sit a good 3" higher than the highest beam. If possible, I'd...

[/url] Ok, so it's "extra low voltage" lights I'm having fitted then..? Can it be dimmed?

    Dimmer switches

Sorry, not sure I know what you mean by this: "Just arrange the switching to control which lamps have power for bright and which for dim. " The lamps are all part of the same fitting, they don't have individual connections. Are you suggesting we instead get several light fittings on the...

    Dimmer switches

Fair enough, but it does say on my switch not to use wire wound transformers with it (as do most dimmer switches I've seen) I can get 10 replacement bulbs for about £2, so not too bothered if they burn out a bit quicker. Pulling bulbs out every time we want to change the ambience of the room...

    Dimmer switches

Hi, thanks for the reply. I (my wife) bit the bullet and ordered two identical light fittings. Sure enough, they are 12v G4 bulbs with a big nasty looking wire round transformer concealed in the ceiling rose. The transformer appears to be Chinese - A HTV105C1 made by Huibolong unless I'm...

In fact, sod it, my Mrs has decided she definitely wants a light fitting with G4 bulbs - which double remote dimmer can i use to dim these?
