    Sub floor advice please

Thanks for the reply that's great. The ground is clay / shingle and the BCO who I've already spoken to said that it should be a ' normal' 1 metre dig based on the ground. I think it's probably better to do a full plans so we both know where we are anyway, also saves a few quid doing so.

    Sub floor advice please

Actually, I've just realised the insulation and slab are the opposite way around to what I'd imagined... Would it not be better to put the insulation on top of the slab and then screed on top of the insulation with a separating layer in between? I'm used to underfloor heating where this is the...

    Sub floor advice please

hi all, I'm in the middle of doing some plans to show the LABC my intentions for a self built single storey rear extension. I'm also trying to gather how far I need to dig out below FFL. Could someone confirm whether this document is still acceptable please? It's a few years old...

Full width 6 metre knock through

Any ideas what the weight would be approximately? I'd guess it's 2.5 metres long, 150mm by 220mm ? I was hoping to loosen it up and drop it out vertically with 4 or 5 blokes on hand! Do you think I'm being a bit optimistic there?!

Full width 6 metre knock through

I've checked the council website and it may not be a site visit but an hours 'consultation' for free. It's awkward as there's no point paying if it's not reasonably possible. Perhaps I could take some photos and visit them instead.

Full width 6 metre knock through

Thanks for the advice, very useful. What's the available space between the strong boy props and the wall normally? I had imagined placing the steel on the floor right to the wall first, then once the existing was out of the way lifting up and sliding in!? Access via the other side should be an...

Full width 6 metre knock through

It appears to be 2 X 150mm ish wide lintels separated by some form of DPC rather than one which should make life easier!?

Full width 6 metre knock through

Party wall is something I'm trying to avoid, well, work around. The neighbour on the left can be pretty awkward at times for no apparent reason. I am going to discuss the plans with them once I have a form idea on how it will go together. However, if they decide to play up, could building...

Full width 6 metre knock through

There is a wall 2.7 metres back from the wall in question that is a load bearing internal wall running parallel.

Full width 6 metre knock through

Hi, Yes, I'd be quite happy with a pier each end if it simplified the project. I guess the next step would be a 1 hr consultation with the building control officer, which I think they offer for free. I'll look up diagramming a roof !?! but yes, it'd be a lean-to type roof. Thanks for the...

Full width 6 metre knock through

Yes, that would be my next point to investigate. I'm fairly happy that it is standard construction. My concern is about installing the steel. Would my local planning inspector insist on something a structural calculation didn't include? There seems little point in getting a structural engineer...

Full width 6 metre knock through

I've quickly knocked out a bit more, it's quite tough going as it has a mesh covering the render and is well bonded to the block work. It's definitely block. I have found the mortar lines. The infill I referred to, seems to be the same material used as the padstone below the lintel? Not sure if...

Full width 6 metre knock through

Picture attached. From right: block, approx 50mm of some form of concrete fill in, mortar line, concrete lintel.

Full width 6 metre knock through

Hi, This is exactly what I originally thought and I posted a thread about it a while ago. However, it appears not. We were originally led to believe that the house was a wimpey no fines when we bought it 9 years ago. It's not, it's standard block work. Then thought as above the white strip...

Full width 6 metre knock through

Hi, Yes, all through building control. What's the purpose of the goal post then as I have a good 150mm bearing on each end for it to sit on? What sort of span wouldn't require this out of interest. It's possible I could reduce the span by 500mm either end by building up the windows first...

Full width 6 metre knock through

Hi, Thanks both for the replies. The steel you mentioned is about 32kg a metre from what I can find so, yeah, fairly weighty but manageable just about I think. The joists do run into the inner skin at 90 degrees to the wall so that sounds like a possible idea with the acrow props. How would...

Full width 6 metre knock through

hi, I have a mid terrace house which I'm looking to add a rear extension to. The biggest issue for me is the knock through. The current cavity wall is 6 metres long, with 2 upvc Windows and a door already in place (the door and one window are joined and share the same lintel) Both lintels are...

Structural full width lintel - Help please

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I'm not entirely sure what it is. Obviously it spans the windows and from the underside of it at the top of the window it appears to be pre cast. I've hit reinforced concrete above the windows as you d expect when hanging curtain poles etc. I've also scraped a patch...

Structural full width lintel - Help please

Hi, No, it's a standard build with joist and chipboard floors. I was told it was a wimpey build when we bought it, but I can't find anything to back this up (other than poor workmanship !)
