check the condition of the cable and replace if fraid. if not then simple cleaning and lube should do it.

if you are as enthusiastic as you sound you need to do city and guilds or no one will touch you with a barge poll.

try covering the air intake while you pull on the throtle linkige. as it starts to stall uncover the intake and repeat. this should flood the intake and if there is rubbish in there it should flush it. also try wd40 during the same procedure.

try pulling or easing the knob off and lube the metal behind. if this does not work then you may need a switch.
