    Improving insulation

hi. maybe 25 years ago the house I live in was extended. The kitchen was widened and a single pitch lean to tiled roof added above. When fitting some down lighters I think I noticed there is no more than about 50mm of loft insulation above the plasterboard. The kitchen is coldish and so I think...

    Stub Walls for beam

Thank you, most informative. Joists upstairs run parallel to the wall being knocked through. Not too bothered about a flush ceiling, but want the nibs as small as poss.

    Stub Walls for beam

Just come back to my posting as I thought it had died - I can see it's still very much alive! Just wondering what size of nib wall would be expected / minimum ? Also, I am told you can hide a beam in the ceiling? Does this give a flush ceiling to the knock through? And how on earth do you...

    Stub Walls for beam

Timber is better than steel in terms of fire? I also know that the beam does not know if it's a party wall or not, just like the beam won't know if it's legal or not. If I cut into the existing side wall will the beam sit on both "walls" or just "mine". Whilst I would prefer a flush wall to...

    Stub Walls for beam

Can the beam sit on existing wall, even if it's a party wall? Most people are advising a steel goal post, but say it's expensive. What makes goal posts expensive, the material itself is not expensive and the fabrication techniques used are not complex.

    Stub Walls for beam

Hi 1930s Semi Detached House. Looking at extending the lounge area by 2m. This will entail knocking through and a beam installing to support the 1st floor. In order to maximise the size of the room I want the beam to rest on the smallest "stub walls" possible. So, is there a minimum length of...

Vaillant Ecotec Anti cycling explanation / d2 function.

Thanks for a helpful reply. So, if the default setting was 20, then it could be up to 20 mins before refiring the boiler, so the rads cool. If the setting was 5, the time would be reduced so less cooling time? I accept the poor flow needs sorting. Thanks.

Vaillant Ecotec Anti cycling explanation / d2 function.

Hi Further to a recent post on rads taking 2 hours to heat up................. I have started to look at the internal programmable functions of the boiler. What I noticed that the boiler often switches off during the initial heating of the CH water, long before the rads are hot. I have picked...

2 hours for rads to heat up

OK will try that tonight, but thinking about it, I have the CH switched on at 5pm and the hw does not come on till 7 ish so thats 2 hours without water and poor heating. In the morning both come on at 6 and similar coolness is the result. HW BTW is very hot!

2 hours for rads to heat up

Slight improvement in heat up times. I was thinking of replacing the 8mm microbore with 15 pipe in case of blockages. But I would be surprised if a blockage as two rads do heat fully after the two hours, but as i said, one, and ironically this one is a new rad piped with 15 pipe stays cool...

2 hours for rads to heat up

Hi I have a Vailant Ecotec system boiler, 24kw feeding 10 rads in total, plus heating the water cylinder. I live in a typical 1930's 3 bed semi. Upstairs rads, if on, heat quickly and to full power. In fact out of 4 rads upstairs only two are ever on, we prefer cool bedrooms! Downstairs rads...

    Wardrobe Lights

Hi I have "inherited" 3, 12v, 10w halogen wardrobe lights without a power supply. I'd like to use them, regardless of there now being LED equivalents, simply because the lamps fit the holes in the wardrobes and newer alternatives dont. Obviously I will be powering via the mains and so can...

    Suspended Wood Floor Insulation

Hello I have a traditional wood suspended floor with 3 feet of crawl space below. I have used loft insulation held in place with wire between the joists. I am wondering if I used a foil material like a space blanket under the joists and insulation, stapled to the joists to add to the thermal...
