    please help

Unless it is an E14 or E 27, the two most poular screw-in sizes in the UK, in which case the polarity requiremtn was deleted in the last round of updates - now 709-09-01 for the reg counters. I presume for harmonisation, not safety!

    unused mcb's

But remember to re-label the CU to make it clear they are now spare, and tie any unused wires from ex-circuits out of the way, or ideally remove from the CU altogether.

    chopped mower cable

Er it usually doesn't have much more inside, but please realise that an AC motor goes round the same way, even if you change over the leads to it - it is an AC motor after all. (Alternating polarity anyway..) (if Crofty was right you'd have to swap between cutting the grass backwards and...

    is this ok?

It does, but not all have one, or it is in a very non-obvious place, so non obvoius you could miss siing it at all during installation. In any case, that was not my original point - what i was saying, was that with modern loading it is possible to overheat the cable at one end of the ring and...

    Reducing Cable Size

If that cable is overload protected by the fuse in the FCU it feeds, and short circuit prtecte by the supply fuse or breaker, then yes, it is acceptable. Not nice, but acceptable.

    chopped mower cable

If it is a modern product with a 2 core flex, then live and neutral are interchangable. This is one of the many requirements of modern product legislation - after all it could be sold in Europe, where the 2 pin sockets are reversible.

    please help

You will need to either contact the maker for instruction, or if you have a meter bell it out. Live and neutral will go to the lamp, it shjould not matter which way. earth will go to the case. Getting that righ will be very important. If you plug it in part P will not affect you, but if you make...

    floodlight wiring

If, as is likely, the light is <500 watts and the cable run is <10m, either cable you suggest will be OK. For reasons of inrush, the 5A fuse or even a 13 would be prefferred.

    No earth?

Seconded. The company mus provide an earth terminal if they can - and here looks like a lead sheathed cable, wrapped in arsenic rag. (to discourage the rats from sharpening teeth on the soft lead. I'd place bets there was once either a clamp around the exposed lead at the service cable head, or...

    yet another cooker question

It would be OK either way, as far as regs are concerned, so long as the cables can cary the full current the breaker might supply. The idea of separate isolation might be desirable if there is ever a fault.

    RCD on a TT System

The only situation when TT does not require RCD protection of some kind on all circuits, is if you can show the ZE is low enough to operate the trip (MCB/Fuse) of the non-RCD protected circuits. With a typical rod impedance of perhaps ~100 ohms or so in dry weather, a normal earth rod will not...

    wiring plug

Viner. If, and only if, you can convince yourself the motor is good for UK mains, it won't matter which is live or neutral. But with that description, I would not be sure if it was OK for mains at all - could it be american (110volt) for example. Any chance of a web foto? Maybe we can...

    cooker hood wiring

It would be better on a fused spur from the ring main or from the cooker circuit. From wattage point of view its no worse than an extractor fan, which are often fed from the lights, (still with their own switch fuse) but it is not what people expect to find when servicing it to change filters or...

    bs5839-1 2002

All county libraries can supply any BS document, usually at about 7 days notice to order in, very few stock the lot!. All you have to do is join the librarby. However, while doning so you usually have to sign to say you will not breach coyrights - i.e. not copy more than 10% of any one...

    Installing a shower booster pump

Keep it separatly fused - and Id suggest powerig off the ring main, not the lights. It will work OK, but you will find the dipping lights most annoying when the motor starts up, and back EMF from the motor can confuse certain types of electronic dimmer.

Single light switch controlling 2 lighting circuits

If the norma switch is change-over (as used at the ends of a 2 way circuit) then you can have com =live, 1= direct to lamp, and 2 = to lamp via X10s If not the X10's need to be changeover too, and weire as a type 2 two way switch (see reference posts for 2 way switch wiring.)

    12 Volt extractor

Usually the lighting circuit, unless there is a god reasin not to. See refernce posts at top for a sample wiring diagram. Also decide what you will do about Part P. (Ignore or notify seem to be the DIYers choices)

    is this ok?

The MK ones do certainly have fuse, but not the cheaper ones at www.buy-electrical.co.uk for example. On the back it still says 13A max, but no method of guaranteeing that.

    Who to ask?

contact your metering company, and if you get no joy try the DNO (network operator - used to be called rec, region electricity company, but now when they answer the phone they say 'we dunno' hence the new name!) Joking aside, identify your DNO contact persons from this web page...

    Parallel T&E Cables

Either (preferred) make it a 30A radial, and just use thr 6mm and then 4mm as daisy chain after it emerges, or use the wires as two limbs of a ring main, as if they were both 2.5mm but dont just paralell it up at both ends and say 6mm+2.5 mm - the current sharing will not work properly, and you...
