i am installing a spotlight in the garden but the wires for the plug are not coloured instead they are numbered 1 to 3 does anybody know what wire goes where for the earth neutral and live

it's just a normal outdoor spotlight the sort that you stake into the ground???

Where did you Buy it?

Why does it have no instructions with it?

Do you know how to use a Multimeter?

in that case then it must just be one of each, the sort you just wire into a plug

You will need to either contact the maker for instruction, or if you have a meter bell it out. Live and neutral will go to the lamp, it shjould not matter which way. earth will go to the case. Getting that righ will be very important. If you plug it in part P will not affect you, but if you make it fixed wiring, then it ought to be notified to the local authorities.

thanks to all i copied the wires from the lamp its self and it works fine thanks for the advice

Unless it is an E14 or E 27, the two most poular screw-in sizes in the UK, in which case the polarity requiremtn was deleted in the last round of updates - now 709-09-01 for the reg counters. I presume for harmonisation, not safety!
