    Ceiling preparation?

redzed, the trick with filling is to use about a 4" wide floppy bladed filling knife and skim over fairly quickly building up the coats, it dries quicker. Don't sand in between filler coats as this puts dry sanded powder over all your work. You will know when your skimming has covered everything.

    Best lining paper?

Just to add, yes an old 4" soft brush for size is good to run round the edges and into the corners and fiddle bits. I then use a smooth 9" roller to size the main big walls, but then go to a medium pile for the pasting the paper on the table, it leaves a bit extra on the paper.

    Ceiling preparation?

It looks as if an incorrect coat of paint was added as the very first paint coat on the ceiling and the following coats of paint are what you have scraped off. If the property was very old, then it may have had a first coat of whitewash. At least if it comes off in your hand then if it...

    Best lining paper?

rivergold, if you had bad problems with bubbles under the paper and you had sized the walls, were you using a brush to paste the paper or the roller? Using a roller helps prevents dry spots on the paper. Also, if I want to make sure all the joins are gone on lining paper, I use a soft mix...

    patchy mist coat

Hi Larco, Joe-90 is right, when you go over the skimmed plaster with the thinned supermatt, it will be patchy, but all it means is that the plaster has sucked the paint in better in some places than others. When new plaster has been polished off with the trowel, in some places it can feel more...

Which Gold Paint for Metal Fence Finials

For a bit of fun on a farm, we gilded over the handles on the gardeners wheelbarrow, it looked great!! Not that it has anything of value to this post. :)

    Paint color for business wall

Blue carpet  Reminds me of an airport lounge where they don't want you to hang about so they make you sit with it under your feet so you feel uncomfortable. :(

Tips on stirring Zinsser Bulls eye 123...

Max, It is a thick paint but that's because it has to cover the surface well. I use a small mixing paddle in the end of an 18v makita drill, take it steady to start and it should be mixed when it has drawn up any thick residue from the bottom of the tin. You can thin the paint but not...

Zinsser gardz over old wallpaper paste

Do not use fabric conditioner, it has nothing to do with painting and decorating. Buy some sugar soap, granules or liquid and use this to wash down the walls. It is not really difficult, work a small area at a time and keep changing the water. Zinsser gardz will cover over and seal in any...

    rusty gutters

Hi ando, if you are wanting to sand off the cast iron gutters and downpipes, try using the sanding mesh rather than sandpaper. It removes more material and blends in the high and low spots where you have flaking paint much quicker as it does not block up the mesh. Available from the...

Which Gold Paint for Metal Fence Finials

Hi again Malcolm I guess the ardenbrite is one of the best as they are a more specific metal paint supplier in the golds etc. Shop around, but Decorating direct will get you sorted and post out to you. Usual thing, prime, gold paint, then a glaze over the top. Only thing i don't know...

Which Gold Paint for Metal Fence Finials

You are quite right misterhelpful, Ardenbrite is a good product and I would not relish working my way around a park with it, or gold leaf!! It was just my thought that when the gold leaf glitters, it does have that wow effect plus it's nice to tell the neighbours its REAL gold

Removed ceiling tiles, crack and uneven ceiling

Sorry Andy, as handyman says, if the ceiling is very bad, then you could get the ceiling skimmed over with a new coat of plaster but you will need a plasterer to do this for you :( Its a bit more cost but looks nice after. However, when I was referring to 'skim over' what I mean is...

Rendered wall in Conservatory needs painting

edflyer, what have you sealed the bricks with and you say you have bought a primer What sort and what for? If your external walls are now to become inside walls, make sure they are full dry, AFTER the conservatory has gone up. Both walls will be dirty, being exposed to the elements so...

Removed ceiling tiles, crack and uneven ceiling

Andy, don't use caulk to fill the ceiling cracks, you will not be able to rub it down afterwards. Clean out the crack, use a stanley blade, sideways on, to make the v. Blow out all the dust with a bike pump or suck with a vacuum cleaner nozzle. Try and avoid the ready mixed filler...

Which Gold Paint for Metal Fence Finials

Hi Malcolm If you do not have too many finials to do, why not consider doing them in real gold leaf. It is not that difficult For outside work, rub the finials down really well to make sure they have no flakey paint or rust. Give the finials a coat of red oxide, allow to dry for...

Help asap please - not happy with coving job

If the walls are not very even, coving can pull back away from the wall at the pressure points, but how bumpy are the walls!!! I have to say that I pin my coving tight to the wall with nails until the adhesive has dried and if it has sprung away from the walls it is now too late to put it...

    Staining a front pine door

The black brushes are usually thicker and hold more of what you are trying to apply. hence the are more suited for paint The woodstain brushes quite often have a mix of bristle and can be thinner in volume as stains and varnish are often quite thin to work with so do not need to hold lots of...
