    Header tank stagnent

No it is fine. The water in the system does not get topped up. So will go stagnant. There should be a cover for the header tank but nothing is wrong.

To drain or not to drain

Just drain the whole system. No issue.

    Advice on Boiler installtion quote

Wouldn't bother with any of them. Certainly not if the grant isn't covering the whole cost. Heat recovery for hot water will never get you back the cost even with the grant. Crazy government.

    Biomass boilers and thermal stores....

Had my biomass boiler installed for free. :-) The reason the biomass comes with the thermal store is the run up time. Assuming starting from cold it could well take the biomass boiler 30 minutes to get producing any real useful heat or that is what it seems like with mine. I would say if...

    Strange Behaviour - Combi boiler

What does the pressure in the central heating system read on the boiler when you have the valve shut and when you open the valve. Do you hear any flow of water at the boiler when moving the radiator valve.

    Mains pipe ducting

Possibly duct. If copper would have been protected from the concrete in some way. If it is plastic pipe they might have done it on the cheap and just buried it in the concrete. You should see any ducting where it goes into the concrete and comes out again. It's rare to see it done well...

Grant oil boiler switch not cutting in boiler

Timer is faulty if you can fire the boiler manually.

Moved house - advice on how central heating/water works..

Unless it is a big house not really necessary. Easiest way it to find the hot pipe at the furthest point and then it is a case of connecting this back to the cylinder. Depending on the layout of the house this may be easy or difficult.

Moved house - advice on how central heating/water works..

You have an unvented hot water cylinder. So mains cold goes straight into the cylinder and it is under pressure. When you get the boiler serviced get a guy who is registered for unvented cylinders and have him check the system at the same time. Otherwise the boiler heats the central...

    One pipe system woes

I understand the problem. What the guy did to pump it through each radiator certainly worked so your piping is wrong for the new radiator. Converting a system to two pipe is fairly straightforward assuming it is easy to get at all the piping. I would estimate 2-3 days on an average house. I...

    New Boiler needed?

Forget worcester. Go for an Atag will outperform worcester. Atag will be able to recommend a local fitter for the boiler.

    Fountain

I have bought a small fountain for the garden. It has 3 tiers and the bottom one contains the pump. It is made of a light concrete material. Question is should I drill a hole at the bottom of the fountain for the pump flex to go down and then seal with silicon to hide the power cable...

    TIME FOR A NEW BOILER - WHAT DO YOU THINK . . . .?

If your house is of reasonable size you can get a free biomass boiler. Had mine put in start of july all for £0.00

    Combi boiler / accumulator tank

Costs of such systems and integrating will never be economic and therefore given size of house much better to stay with a combi boiler. I had a solid fuel rayburn which would happily heat your house but more trouble than it is worth. I put in a gas/electric range cooker which performs 100...

    Combi boiler / accumulator tank

Solar thermal panels complete waste of time and money. You haven't said the size of the house. But I would stick with a combi. You'll soon get bored with a solid fuel stove in the kitchen.

wallstar boiler keeps locking out & getting air in the p

Yes looks like you have a bit missing. Don't get your existing boiler guy back. He has just been wasting your money and time.

wallstar boiler keeps locking out & getting air in the p

In this case it looks as if the non return valve has been replaced with a hand valve. On the wallstars I've seen I don't remember seeing a hand valve in the boiler.

wallstar boiler keeps locking out & getting air in the p

Get someone else. The guy you have is a fool. I could be wrong but it doesn't look like you have a none return valve in the system. You can change the whole burner it isn't going to fix the problem. Or failing that a tiger loop.

Am I heating our water right (inc. solar)?

Ideally you want the hot water nearly exhausted when you leave the house for the day in the morning so the solar has chance to heat it up during the day. You'll nead to read the manual for your particular solar system. Generally the saving with solar hot water is minimal so it isn't...

Combi boiler and turning off services

If the insurance company is a problem here the only way is to turn off everything apart from the electric and use a small blow heater in the house set to a low setting to prevent ice in harsh conditions. The combi will fine left with this arrangement.
