Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

Most of the insulation is now in. I'm hiring a platform to get to the top of the roof later this week (it's 4m), and will put in the last two sheets, and then overboard with insulated plasterboard. I'm trying to decide how best to plasterboard around the velux windows, the frames of which...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

So having taken a break over Christmas & New Year, work resumes on the extension, and we're nearly finished ... The floor screed is all down and drying out. We used just over six tonnes of sand + cement at 4:1, all mixed on site in a hired cement mixer, and that was damned hard work! I'm...

    Kitchen Cabinet Doors 590mm wide

I have been very impressed with the service & quality at http://www.kitchenandbedroomdoors.co.uk/

    Best plastic fittings

What a stupid thread! No wonder DIYers don't always hold tradesmen in the highest regard.

    Best plastic fittings

I have very recently completed a CH installation with PolyPlumb fittings & barrier pipe. I used push-fit reducing tees 22mm/15mm for the branches to individual radiators, and used 15mm copper pipe for the above-floor visible sections connected to the rad. valves. No problems: no leaks.

    Plass4 Universal Coupling

Yes, it's fine, now. I was surprised how much tightening was required, but that is down to the design of the fitting, I think.

    Plass4 Universal Coupling

I'm connecting a new 25mm MDPE underground water pipe to old 1/2" copper pipe and I've bought a Plass4 Universal Connector, which is OK for pipes 15mm-22mm diameter. My attempt today to make the connection resulted in a dribbling leak from the universal side, but I wonder whether I just...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

Badly underestimated quantity of sharp sand! The main extension is 2/3rds done, but not yet touched the conservatory. Have used 3 bulk bags, and reckon I'll need at least 2 more. I need some concrete for the foundation of a new driveway/garden retaining wall, so I guess I'm buying 3 + 1 of...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

Started laying floor screed today: done about a third. I need it to go off so that I can construct stud-partition walls and get in the last three radiators. Boiler coming on Thursday!

    Floor Screed

I'm starting the screeding job tomorrow, having laid the underfloor insulation and taken delivery of all the materials & a hired mixer. How long will it take before it's OK to walk across the finished floor without risk of damage? I know it takes a while to attain full strength, but I could...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

I'm still spending at quite a rate (insulation, plastering, 2nd fix electrics etc.), but I'll post some summary figures when we are a bit nearer to being done. Having been let down by a cowboy drive layer last weekend (needing to get a water service pipe across an old concrete drive), we're...

Laying Celotex between floor slab & screed

Quick question: When laying Celotex sheets, does it matter which side faces 'up' - the printed side or the plain side?

Now Enid Blyton is a racist

She can't update them: she's dead. At least that means there won't be any more. 800 is more than enough for anyone. Mind you, I'd rather read her stuff than the Daily Mail.

    Installing Underground Drainage

Most manufacturers say very clearly that you should NOT use household detergent to lubricate push-fit drainage pipes. Builders do it all the time. Draw your own conclusion.

Plastic push-fit and radiator valve connections

I have recently done my CH pipework with polypipe (BTW, I hope you're using barrier pipe), but anything visible was done in copper, as PP isn't straight or stiff, and looks crap when exposed. You can push 15mm copper straight into PP pushfit fittings, and you can use PP with normal compression...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

I'm pretty pleased, so far, and Her Indoors is very happy - the house was her childhood home and we've given it a new lease of life. There's still lots to do: inside looks like a bomb site (although I have almost completed the complete refurbishment and redecoration of the interior not...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

No, it's not doing materially more than before: there were only two windows between, with a very small brick pillar, and actually, it's bigger than it looks. The plans were reviewed by a structural engineer (who specified the vaulted ceiling support) and building control were also quite happy...
