    Improving insulation

Hi - just found this and wondering what you ended up doing with your ceiling? I'm interested as your kitchen sounds exactly very similar ours - the old kitchen wall was knocked out about 20 years ago to join the into an older out-building, with a lean to style pitch roof that goes up about 2m...

House painted the wrong colour... maybe... advice?

Cheers folks. If it was standard 'trade' terminology, like @Bosswhite says - good to clarify at quote stage Yup that's about the full story - I've got an email chain of the chat, so that's all documented. On a previous email I wrote the following: 'was this quote for white glass all round...

House painted the wrong colour... maybe... advice?

Hi. We got a local painting company to paint the exterior of the house - window frames, gutters, gables, fascias, eves, soffits etc etc. We requested 'white gloss for all the woodwork, and grey for the gutters'. But they've painted everything grey except the window frames which they're painted...

Internal wall insulation - to remove old plaster....

Hi all. An extension section of our kitchen is mostly single skin solid sandstone/mortar with plaster(possibly paster board?) right against the mortar. I'd like to internally insulate the wall using something like the celotex insulated plasterboard. I'm wondering if it's ok to fix new studs...

    Ending a 'dead' cable

Hi - cheers - I'll fit a backbox/blank cover. It's an old house with many hidden secrets so good to avoid adding more! They're directly above a bay window - at some point I may have a look at removing some of the plaster board and adding more insulation - so I can investigate where the wires...

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

Just a follow up - we received plenty of good advice on here and this is how we finally have heat in all our rooms: manually removed, took outside and cleaned smaller radiators replaced pump - this got downstairs working but upstairs still not really working tried x400 - didn't do much got a...

    Ending a 'dead' cable

Hi, above our window were two lights - they've never worked since I moved in - no current I want to remove the light fittings and plaster over. I'm just wondering the best way of ending this cable - ideally I'd remove all the plaster and trace the cable back to it's other end - but this could...

Draining System with Aladdin HC30 autobleeds

Did I read somewhere that you can pour the x400 in through the magnaclean filter or do I need to buy a dosing kit (it's a pressurised system).

Draining System with Aladdin HC30 autobleeds

gblades - thanks for the hv30 / hv30c advice. johnD - thanks for the advice about draining and removing the radiator. I'll grab some chemicals and wait for the next rainy weekend... and give it a shot

Draining System with Aladdin HC30 autobleeds

Hi folks - we're getting there with our heating system, but there's still 2 radiators blocked upstairs. The top 30-40% heat up, but the rest must be full of sludge. We got others working by taking off and hosing down outside - but they were smaller, downstairs, nearer doors and above tiled...

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

Right - just for peoples info - here's an update. I checked the pump, it was set to full. We'd made some improvements but decided another shot at asking a professional. The guy came and pretty quickly noticed the pump wasn't doing much. So that's replaced now, and the magnaclean moved to the...

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

Thanks JohnD. I'm not sure if we have F&E tank as it's a pressurised system. I'll try the pump speed thing, and I can put some x400 in the magnaclean - although there is very little flow going through that return it may start to dissipate through the system - as you say - if it's getting warm...

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

Hi all. Thanks for the info folks. I think it's a balancing issue that's exacerbated by sludge build up in the slower flowing sections. I tried closing off all the other radiators in the house - and the downstairs rad in question did actually get warm - it took an hour or so - which is the...

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

haven't tried turning all hot ones off. will try... If the return is blocked, is it normal that I can fill up the rad from this pipe?

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

Hi - cheers - will add a photo tonight. The system is powered by an old (1995ish) ideal mexico 2 (non-combi) boiler with a hot water tank, pressurized system. The radiator is fairly standard, less then 1m wide double skinned, bleed valve top left opened with key, shut off valves both sides had...

Water flows into rad from both sides, but doesn't flow when heating on

Our central heating system has a few problems: one of which is a downstairs radiator that's been completely cold since we moved in. We took it off, cleaned it (a bit dirty), and put it back. We refilled it by opening the tap on the left. Ran heating system - heat. We then opened the bleed...

    Loft insulation sloping sections

Hadn't thought about that horizontal joist! ...but it has just led me to the idea of cutting 2 large rigth angle triangles, first one going down, then next one cut in a way that it can slide in and wedge against the first pushing out to tough the sides...

    Loft insulation sloping sections

Hi folks, Next task on the old house is loft insulation. In one section of the house there is a gap between the slates, rafters and rooms (plaster and lath) we can access from the loft (green section in attached). You can see right down into them from the loft (See photo) and so we're hoping we...

Circuits running out of power and high bills

Hi, just an update for anyone interested. Electrician came round, and didn't take long for him to figure out the problem was outside, and called SSE. They came pretty quick and tracked the problem down a joint at one of the poles leading to the house. @Taylortwocities - that plug in monitor...
