Patio doors- should I even attempt to install them?!

Blainey, I installed a couple of sets of patio doors from Wickes. Whilst the doors weren't of the highest quality, they do the job sufficiently well. The story is in the Your Projects forum called House Renovation Sun Room, dated October 2005. It's currently on the 4th page as you browse the...

    Wierd inline Fuse Thing

Dingbat - you're a gentleman and a scholar. My thanks to all on this. A trivial thing I know, but I hate leaving live stuff hanging around.

    Wierd inline Fuse Thing

Spark/Plugwash - many thanks. I hate to bury live wires, so I just want to be sure that I understand what you're saying to me. This is a connector for a low ampage device (clock) fed by single core (phase) with a 1amp fuse, and as such can be simply terminated in a normal terminal block and...

    Wierd inline Fuse Thing

Nice idea John - but no coconut ! Boring old 3 bed end-of-terrace. Burglar alarm was in the under-stairs cupboard, wiring to that all resolved and removed. Unlikely connector to electric clock because of position (lounge diner) and is an in-line fuse (on phase, so no neutral to connect to)...

    Wierd inline Fuse Thing

It is in the lounge/diner, above the door, and just below ceiling height. It appears to come from under the floorboards on the landing. Unfortunately I don't remember seeing this particular single core grey cable when I was under there, although there was a collection of 2.5mm ringmain and...

    Wierd inline Fuse Thing

BAS Thanks for the reply, and apologies for the vagueness. It's clear I'm at fault for not carrying out a proper inspection (hence my frustration at discovering this at this late stage). Apologies also about the "connection plate" (whatever that is!). It must have been past my brain's...

    Wierd inline Fuse Thing

Hi - need your help please. I'm renovating a 1960s house. I have discovered (now that I've got the carpets down  ) that there is this wierd plastic thing on the wall. It is about 3 ins (sorry, 75mm) square, has an oval hole in it (like it could be a thermostat or something similar). On...

    Ideal Concord WRS Boiler

Appreciate your help guys, however I've decided that it's best to get a combi put in. Boiler's 30yrs+ and probably hugely inefficient. Add to that the fact that there is no cylinder stat. Just for the record, the web pages were very useful, as were the instructions regarding wiring of...

    Ideal Concord WRS Boiler

Thanks Chris - I'll check tomorrow and update this post. B.O.B. - need a little help here pls. I've been on the Honeywell website and searched for C PLan - it doesn't recognise this....

    Ideal Concord WRS Boiler

Chris - I'll answer as best I can I believe that there is only one valve, which is sited on the floor by the cylinder, and my memory tells me that there are some fairly hefty pipes (I had assumed 22mm but certainly could be 28). There is a junction box (or was) to the wires, and also this is...

    Ideal Concord WRS Boiler

Hi, I need to re-instate the wiring for the central heating system, having an Ideal Concord WRS boiler (I know, installed by Noah). Timer was a very old type apparently (now removed) so I'll be wiring up a new one of those too. So, the configuration is: Fused switched spur off ring main 2...

Idiot Requires Help With Building Regs Please

Nice one guys. I also checked with my LABC. They had no objections at all to buried pipes, but did also suggest thta I talk to Severn Trent to check on Water Regs (funny, I thought that's why I phoned LABC ! :? ) All help much appreciated - thanks again.

Idiot Requires Help With Building Regs Please

Thanks Paul - that was quick ! Double skin exterior wall, so I'm guessing that I won't exceed depth limits with 15mm copper. Pipes will then be plastered and tiled over. Do I need any further protection ?

Idiot Requires Help With Building Regs Please

Potentially dumb question: Ignoring whether it is desirable or not, is it permissible under Building Regs to chase or bury hot & cold pipes in the wall? I'm thinking probably 15mm copper, but maybe also flexi. Your help, as always, greatly appreciated.

    Soil against Garage Wall

Hi, Mother-in-law has a flower bed that backs on to her back garage wall. Problem is that this flower bed is about 4 ft deep (a metre and a bit in new money), 8ft wide and is now seeping water into the brickwork. I appreciate damage has already been done, but as a damage limitation exercise...

    House Renovation - Sun Room

I've requested one final photo from those awfully nice admin guys, just to show the finished article. The last thing to happen now will be the rendering and pebble-dashing, but since I'm not going to do that myself it seems a cheat to claim the credit! Incidentally, the BCO came, checked the...

Looking at new project, need some ideas on cost

I've renovated a couple of houses, and I have budgeted £3K for a combi-boiler heating system, and £2K for a full rewire. I've not been wildly out so far. Naturally the costs depend on size/volume of rooms, number of circuits, number of fancy extras and so on, but those are my budgetary figures...
