    Spanner/wrench for toilet flush backnut

Haven't you got to wait a while for the silicon to cure though? What about lsx or plumbers mait instead?

    Spanner/wrench for toilet flush backnut

Yes I'm talking about the close coupled bolts with the washers. I know you shouldn't need any sealant but my thinking is that water could make its way down the thread where the bolt goes through the washer.

    Spanner/wrench for toilet flush backnut

By slip joint you mean water pump pliers? And another quick question regards the bolts and washers - is it ok to put a bit of LSX on them? Is LSX safe on rubber?

    Spanner/wrench for toilet flush backnut

I'm looking to fit a new flush valve and am going to need a very wide (70mm approx) wrench to tighten the backnut. Looks similar to the backnut on a basin waste. Where can I get such a wide wrench? The ones in screwfix/toolstation look too small. I don't want water pump pliers as I can't be...

    Shower switch wiring

Going back to the original question... I've read that a common cause of the burning out is due to the cables not being sufficiently tightened in the terminals and that it's good practice to screw them in very tightly. The question is how tight is too tight? Copper is quite soft so isn't it...

    Shower switch wiring

It's going to have to be a square one as that's what I've got now. I'm unsure on the make but as it's burning out I need a new one pronto. Is it essential/recommended to get one with the two screws per terminal? And should it be 45A or 50A? The MCB on the shower circuit is 40A

    Shower switch wiring

Ah ok I see what you mean now and that makes sense. I appreciate the response. Can you recommend a good quality pattress and switch? http://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-logic-plus-1-gang-surface-pattress-box-white-44mm/29110 I looked at this one but the reviews are poor so which is a good one to...

    Shower switch wiring

Sorry for the confusion I'm just still trying to understand what you mean by this. Obviously the SUPPLY on the switch has an earth terminal and the LOAD has an earth terminal. Are you saying connect one of these supplemental earths to the supply side and the other to the load side - in other...

    Shower switch wiring

Thanks, so you're saying fit the earth that's currently loose to the LOAD side earth, and leave the earth that goes to the cold pipe to the earth on the SUPPLY side? I have now taken the switch down and found that one of the live wires is burning out. What is a good replacement switch? I...

    Shower switch wiring

I need to replace my shower switch pattress box so took the old one down and have a query regarding earths. As expected, there's the 3 core cable into the switch and the 3 core cable out but there are also 2 further earth wires. I've been in the loft to check and the earth wired to the...

    Gas Hob issue

Thanks again Tony. I had a new regulator fitted in 2012 - are these adjustable at all or can the spring be lubricated? And when you say 'outlet side' you mean the meter and beyond into the house? I suppose the heat generated inside the box will heat up the meter and increase the pressure...

    Gas Hob issue

Thanks Tony, I would also see it as irrelevant were it not for the fact that the flame has once extinguished completely, leaving unlit gas to come through. I've been reading about thermocouples/flame failure devices but my gas hob doesn't have this feature. I can understand the initial burn...

    Gas Hob issue

In that case the service pipe/inlet is in the sun (like most homes) but not constant sun as it faces west so it's afternoon only. The outlet pipe goes straight from the meter and through the cavity wall, so it's a normal set up. The meter box gets hot and the heat could radiate into the outlet...

    Gas Hob issue

The governor was newly fitted about 2 and a half years ago shortly after I moved in, as there was a slight gas leak on the old one. The pressure and supply is OK for the gas hob and my 30kW combi. The problem is this build up of pressure on warm days. It's like the governor is stuck and lets...

    Gas Hob issue

Yeah a combi gas boiler which doesn't seem to be affected by this problem, possibly as when it fires up its taking more gas through from start up. I guess the hob takes less gas through so the surge then drop then stabilise cycle is more noticeable. Could the supply or governor on the meter...

    Gas Hob issue

I know this isn't central heating but I thought the gas pros would read it so I'm posting here. I've got a gas hob and when the weather is hot the gas supply to it exhibits some strange characteristics. In hot weather, when you turn the gas knob for any of the rings to ON, and light it, the...

    Replacing a ceiling light

Just coming back to this, the light I'll be fitting has a simple terminal block for the wiring which (when wired in) is just housed inside the metal 'cup' which replaces the ceiling rose. I say 'housed' but really it'll be just squashed in together in the final stage of fitting the light. Should...
