extension sockets instead of proper sockets on a ring main

To the layman like me, is this just "trunking"? Do you mean dropping from the ceiling or on a floor conduit. The open area is 2m away from any wall. SWA is Steel Wire Armoured cable, right? Would you recommend using amoured cable if it's being run along the floor? Yup, that's the third...

extension sockets instead of proper sockets on a ring main

He's competant, I'm sure and all our work as to be signed off by Building Control, with electrical safety cert etc. So are conduits on the floor never used in workplaces that abide by H&S etc??? No neither. You don't *have* to have a ring circuit - which in this case would necessitate an...

extension sockets instead of proper sockets on a ring main

We want to provide mains power to some desks in the middle of a open plan area, which has a concrete floor with laminate flooring - so no where to run cabling under the floor. The desks will have between 2 to 8 computers (and their screens). The problem is how to get the ring mains to this...

Many computers in office. How many circuit breakers?

sorry but the link is too much electrical jargon - even for a guy with a degree in the engineering like me :) do we need addtional earth cabling even if those sockets aren't covered by a RCD? do we need additional earth circuit that connects all the double sockets or something? sorry...

    Suitable trim for inbetween partitions

googling doesn't tell me if (say) mdf is suitable ... but fair enough :) and thanks for your help.

    Suitable trim for inbetween partitions

So I got some offline advice to use thin MDF. Apparently these can be as thin as 3mm and hopefully even less and then we can glue these on with a strong glue (e.g. "no nails")? We plan to cut the MDF in 64mm and 56mm strips and paint it, then glue on. Would this work? Also how thin can...

Many computers in office. How many circuit breakers?

Trying my best to follow this so far, given I'm not a sparky myself. The consumer unit has a RCD in the last position. I take it from the advice so far that the RCD should be moved so it only protects the circuits that don't run computers (e.g. the air conditions, lighting circuit, kitchen...

Many computers in office. How many circuit breakers?

Well, basically he hasn't calculated it and could justify at all whether it would be enough. I don't know how to calculate this but it appears neither does he. I'm sure many people here know how much load 30 computers use. (You might ask why I'm using him ... lonh story but he came with the job)

    Suitable trim for inbetween partitions

thanks. who does these? building merchants or specialist metalwork shops?

Many computers in office. How many circuit breakers?

We're wiring up a new large office but I don't trust the electricians calculations. We allowing for about 21 computers (mixture of laptop and desktops) and at least 30 double sockets (for phone chargers and assorted electrical equipment like routers and printers). There is a standard...

    Suitable trim for inbetween partitions

[/url] can these be painted? ideally we wanted to paint them a light grey. I'm guessing it's not easy find upvc trimmings like this in grey already. also, how about the exact sizes - the 64mm and 56mm that we need - can they be made to order

    Suitable trim for inbetween partitions

We've installed some second-hand office partitions that are metal rimmed and set into a timber (3x2") frame. We're looking for an appropiate trim to cover the exposed timber and the metal frame which is a bit worse for wear. See pic at end of post. We could use wooden beading or architrave...

breaking suspended ceiling to get height (edit)

So my plan of having these partitions go right up the concrete ceiling are actually good as they act as a firebreak. Interesting, as our previous plans had partitions only going up to the suspended ceiling - i.e. no "firebreak" - and our Building Control surveyor approved the plans as ok.

breaking suspended ceiling to get height (edit)

The glass is toughened safety glass so it's presumably fire safe. Problem is the timber frame - or since there's only 3-4" of the stuff it won't be a fire hazard?

breaking suspended ceiling to get height (edit)

I hadn't considered fire break :( You mean they should continue only to the suspended ceiling or all the way to the concrete roof above? Firebreak means there should be a gap, right? If they do continue to the actual concrete ceiling (i.e. floor of the story above), is there any other way...

breaking suspended ceiling to get height (edit)

Obviously, he's clearly not the "best" builder, but he has given the best quote and I can't afford more. If you are a competent builder yourself, what is your opinion over whether it would actually work? :)

breaking suspended ceiling to get height (edit)

I'm not doing it myself - got a builder but he's used to doing residential building so suspended ceilings are all new to him as well. I've got to use him as he's given me the best quote by far. I've now added new images to the original post to make it clearer what it should look like. The...
