About to re-render outside of house. Insulation choices pls.

Hi all, Due to the state of disrepair, all the outside rendering on my parent's semi had been taken off in preparation for rerendering. I was thinking of seizing the opportunity and installing some kind of thermal insulation before applying a smooth render on the building. Can someone...

Would removing these doors make the house colder?

George (not Hoover) comes out AFTER the painting and the installation of engineered oiled oak flooring goes in. Oh yes.

Would removing these doors make the house colder?

Oh thats it, lets all pick on my poor doggy now!  Thats another good reason, the poor bugger has been bouncing off that everytime the post comes through. What I save in vet's bills can go to pay the higher heating bills perhaps.

Would removing these doors make the house colder?

Hi all, I have a set of old aluminium sliding doors separating the hallway from the lounge. The lounge is 30' with DG french windows to the South garden and single paned stained leaded to the North. I am installing Oak wooden flooring throughout. The installer has diplomatically suggested...

levelling a step in the middle of a floor

That certainly helps, Thank You. I was thinking of installing WBP on the lower floor to bring it up. But was worried how close the tolerances needed to be between the two floors. So the floor is going to be happy as far as we do not exceed a deviation of 10mm or so.

levelling a step in the middle of a floor

I am sorry mate. Basically the lounge has been created by knocking down the separating wall between two reception rooms. There is a 20-25mm difference in height between the floors in each room - the rear one is lower. So there is a difference, like a step down over the area where the wall...

levelling a step in the middle of a floor

Hi all, 30 foot x 12 foot lounge. Suspended wood floor in very nice condition. I am planning to install solid brushed oak, oiled floor. Problem is that there is a blinking big 20-25mm drop in the floor at the point where there had been a wall partitioning the lounge into the original front...

How do I insulate solid walls?

Hi all, Just some feedback on your advice. The insulation has gone in: K18, 72mm insulation on 12mm board. on all external walls bar kitchen and bathroom. Insulation in roof and ceilings. Net result is at least a 3 degree increase in house temperature. The noise is also slightly reduced...

Linseed oil paint: mould and rot control

Hi all, My new house has got wooden window frames all round, ditto for doors. All are in a bad state of maintenance - cracks, peeling paint, separating joints etc. The windows have single pane real stained glass, leaded lights. I plan to strip & paint everything in Linseed oil paints. I have...

Is a long single panel radiator better than a shorter Double

Thank you for the quick reply, folks. I am aware of the BTU reqs, I am planning to install radiators slightly beyond the requirements, just as the DIYISFUN was thinking. The concern was one of aesthetics and of efficiently heating the entire area. Although a small double puts out the BTU...

Is a long single panel radiator better than a shorter Double

Hi all, Just about to order STELRAD Softline radiators. All go underneath windows in various rooms. Most questions have been answered via this site. Just sat here, phone in hand wondering if I should be ordering longer single panel single convector radiators or go for shorter double panel...

Placing radiators in a long living room?

Hi all, I am an absolute amateur. I have just bought what I hope to be my last house in my lifetime. It is in some disrepair and I plan to do it up. First call is insulation and energy efficiency. I am onto heating now. Loads of Q to follow. Floorplan as below: Specs: 220mm (?) solid...

How do I insulate solid walls?

Excellent post AJROBB, Kingspan suggested K18 on battens. This is what I have changed the orders to, now. But as per installer's request, it is going on treated timber battens anchored to the wall by way of HAMMER FIXINGS. Again, a good point re the damp on cold walls replicated by an...

    Kooltherm 17

This is an old Q, but something that I was trying to find out all day. Kingspan gave a flat NO. Apparently needs battens to give a 25mm airspace between board and wall. This negates use of K17 and advices use of K18. The timber recommended was 25mmx50mm TREATED TIMBER BATTENS, if I did not...

Loft and Ceiling space insulation ideas please.

Hi all, I have just bought a shed of a house. It is made of 9" solid brick external walls and loses heat like there is no tomorrow. I have created a separate thread on wall insulation. in this forum, current decision is PIR plaster boarding the inside of all external walls. Now comes the lof...

How do I insulate solid walls?

Hi all, Survived my first week at the house. It seems that it was rented and on gas meter. As predicted by the posters, the heat loss is (financially) catastrophic. I paid 5 pounds per day, just to keep the place warm. The house temperature plummets within an hour of the CH being turned off...

How do I insulate solid walls?

mointainwalker, the builder isnt "only" looking at that. It is his recommendation. Nothing wrong with offering other, possibly better options to him. I think that is part of being communicative with him. The walls seem to be solid brick no obvious cavity, there is a one or two inch layer of...
