Wickes. Jhonstones,Glidden or Dulux Diamond Matt emulsion

There's no way to answer such a question until you've decided what your requirements are ! Do you want: 1) a cheap job 2) a high quality finish or 3) a durable/washable finish. Every time you favour one variable, you seem to get penalised on the other two. Here are a few of my ideas...

Frozen condensate pipes everywhere you go

I'll add a rant to yours. A friend's 90yo mother has recently been widowed, so we're all keeping an eye on her. She has been on BG monthly maintainence for many years but 3-4 yrs ago was persuaded by them that she needed a new boiler. BG duly installed one and it has been far more trouble...

Need advice painting: how do I do the edges? +Do I need cauk

The secret of a good finish is what's called "maintaining a wet edge". Brush the ceiling/skirting line first (called "cutting in") but only do a short distance (I just do a foot or 18inches) , then while the brushed paint is still wet, use the roller to get as near to the ceiling/skirting as...

    UPVC sheet 8x4 ?

You didn't need to contact them, the calculator I provided you with tells you the price ! So why can't you get 2 of these sheets and glue them back to back? If that's still too expensive then why not just get 1 sheet and laminate it with some relatively cheap material like plywood...

    UPVC sheet 8x4 ?

I think you're probably right - I suspect they don't do uPVC sheet that big. You don't say why you want it but would white acrylic (perspex) suffice? This chap can supply, in 3mm or 5mm http://www.theplasticman.co.uk/index.php?area=calculator

    Brushes

opps, Could I ask you to clear up my confusion. You frequently refer to using "Owatrol" as an additive but Owatrol is a brand name for a company providing many products. When you refer to an additive "when applying the first coat of oil based eggshell" do you mean Owatrol Oil, namely...

    Brushes

I haven't got the dosh for Purdy's, so have become a fan of these: http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/r/RODSRTRW/ Great for all but the most viscous paints and you can afford a few spares!

    Painting a banister

Many thanks to "opps" and "Dec" for the responses. Naturally neither have improved my confidence any but at least you've confirmed my instincts were correct. To answer your questions, the banisters are insitu and complete (glued and nailed) so turning the spindles isn't really an option...

    Painting a banister

I have a friend/client who wants me to paint three runs of banister, all with complex spindles similar to these:- He wants primer, u/c, gloss. It looks like a nightmare. How do the professionals get the job done? I've thought about a painter's mitt for the round parts of the spindles...

Dulux weathershield gloss - 100 metres from the sea

Yes, retailers have 12 months to sell-off the old formula. So you must inspect the tin to know which you're getting. Dulux are perfectly upfront - they’ve changed the formulation ! http://www.icipaints.co.uk/products/2010/differences.jsp From what I can understand the softness issues...

Dulux weathershield gloss - 100 metres from the sea

Absolutely Robbie. In terms of durability there's nothing to touch Weathershield and I've used it on my own windows twice ... with a fifteen year gap in between! But I hope you noticed this is for SASH windows. My openers stuck like mad. The first time I left them shut for a week I had to...

Dulux weathershield gloss - 100 metres from the sea

All paints are changing their formulation right now to comply with the 2010 regulations so there aren't going to be very many people who have used the new paint outside yet. The old Weathershield formulation had great lasting power especially in white but beware that this comes from its...

Terrible Condensation on walls = Mould ... Any help?

Ah! I was searching using the wrong words. Try googling for "polystyrene veneer". Readily available and cheap! However, all parties seem to recommend: 1) Polystyrene veneer 2) Strong lining paper on top 3) then paint or wallpaper to decorate

Terrible Condensation on walls = Mould ... Any help?

BB, One thing that makes a surprising difference is keeping the bathroom door closed while showering/bathing. Not always comfortable if you haven't got heating in there. Also, after you've finished, keep the door closed until the bathroom is fully dried out (at least an hour) If you're...

    Picture hanging

Those look like spring clips merely designed to hold the backing board into the frame. The frame itself looks quite heavy. How about using two angle brackets? Screw the slotted side to the wall with horizontals uppermost & adjust for level. Trim the horizontal limb so that it is...

    Nasty mould outbreak

Box, Your 3rd photo really does have that moisture upward look to it. We've established this is an upstairs room but have you considered a leaking water pipe. Are there any pipes in the area eg: CW to bathroom, HW to bathroom, CH circuit (radiator to radiator) A slowly leaking joint...
