    Getting generator working

Thanks, it's started For future reference, what did the trick was draining the carburettor bowl, adding new petrol and putting a bit of petrol through the spark plug hole

    Getting generator working

Just to verify how to check if I am getting a spark first: shall I take out the spark plug, leave it connected, put it on the ground and pull the cord to see if it makes a spark?

    Getting generator working

I have a petrol generator, which, at the time I stored it was working fine. I left it with petrol and oil (dirty) in it. It was left for a year and now I want to use it again it will not start. I have cleaned the spark plug and checked the air filter. Does anybody know any trick to start -or...

Garage concrete floor on block & beam

I am going to install a concrete screed, 50mm thick, no insulation, on a single garage which is on a block and beam floor. Do I need steel fabric reinforcement? Also do I need a DPM if it is a suspended block and beam base? Thanks

Adhesion of parquet flooring onto chipboard

My advice for other people who have to do something similar is don't use the Mapei Ultrabond adhesive. Apart from the problem of it sticking, if you don't do the job in 1 or 2 days, you waste a lot material because every time you re-seal the package, a lot of the glue will have gone dry the...

    Sanding moisture resistant chipboard

Yes but it doesn't help. Anyway, for others who have to do this, use 40 or 60 grade sandpaper and keep "rubbing" it until all the "paste" goes

    Sanding moisture resistant chipboard

Following from my message about sticking flooring to moisture resistant chipboard, I am trying to sand it with a floor and edge sanders. I have tried 80 and 100 grade sandpapers but they only melt the top coating of the chipboard and create a gunk that clogs the sandpaper; then the machine only...

Fire protection - Ceiling in garage

Thanks for the feed-back. By the way, for the benefit of others, I spoke to Lafarge technical support and they told me that skimming the plasterboard makes no difference to the fire barrier properties. It is the plasterboard that does that.

Adhesion of parquet flooring onto chipboard

I wish people had told me that the Ultrabond was not going to bond to the moisture resistant chipboard (I did ask), then I would have used the Elastilon mat, instead of the double expense and work to use the Mapei product. The interesting thing is that this Elastilon bonds to the flooring only...

Adhesion of parquet flooring onto chipboard

I am installing T&G parquet flooring onto chipboard with moisture resistant layer. I am using one part Mapei Ultrabond P990 1K polyurethane adhesive. I can see that the adhesive bond to the parquet flooring is good, but on the chipboard I can scrape the glue because it does not absorb it as if...

Roof overhang missing - correction needed

I was wondering what people do about older properties that have no overhang on the verge

Roof overhang missing - correction needed

It's only on the bit of the house where the roof sticks out from the main roof at a slightly different angle. Both sides of the bit of roof. I seem to remember that the guy helping me with the roof told me we could continue the tiling on the protrusion with complete tiles, without having to...

Fire protection - Ceiling in garage

So my understanding is that if I put 2 layers of 12.5mm plasterboard, it does not need to be fireline, just ordinary plasterboard, but I need to cover a steel beam, so will 2 layers of ordinary plasterboard do for it? I guess the skimming would have been necessary to complete the fire...

Fire protection - Ceiling in garage

because someone told me that it does not require skimming and it does not need fire joints, just the glue on the edges

Roof overhang missing - correction needed

I discussed the dry verge option with them today. They insist on an overhang "The 40/50 mm overhang will protect the whole wall from driving rain soaking it" they said. Yeah right, more like 10 cm under the verge. Anyway, here are the pictures people asked to see: Why is it the...

Roof overhang missing - correction needed

I know that the 40mm overhang is what should have been done. I am really talking credit crunch here. Stripping the tiles or affecting the work already done is what I do not want to do. That is why I am asking for advice on a solution to seal the gap where water could go in rather than go back...
