    learning german

As I understand English is not too difficult to learn, the pronunciation and grammer can be a pain, but the sentence construction is fairly robust. You can really mess up the layout of the words but still get across your point. Getting fluent with English takes a lot of effort - ask any chav...

    Design software

try www.autodesk.com they specialise in CAD packages from basic 2D upto full 3D parametric modellers. It is not cheap stuff but you can pick up older copies of AutoCAD LT (2D only) on Ebay fairly cheap as people sell them on when they upgrade to 3D packages. You may then need to buy a...

Replacing ceiling light - but no earth in ceiling rose?

We have just had our flat rewired and when it came to the point of connecting up to the mains the electrician found that the old wiring did not have and earth at all. We had to have EDF around to check to check it out and then link into the earth in the down strairs flat. Mind some of the...

Push fit connections.. copper or plastic?

I have just plumbed the central heating using Hep2o pipe and Speedfit fittings and found that it was simple. Make sure you use the same pipe inserts as the pipe you use (I didn't and now have a couple of fittings with inserts stuck in them - well you live and learn!). All wnet together easily...

    New Cooker & Hob

I bought an oven (elec) & hob (gas) package from Macro recently, when the electrician came to wire in the oven he told me that because it was below a certain power rating (forgtten amount, sorry) it could be plugged in to a 13amp socket. If the oven & hob were bought in the UK and are UK spec...

    Stop Silicone Sealant from sticking?

if you try to grease the edges of the tiles then spread the silicone over you will end up with a feathered edge that won't fit back onto the tiles properly the first time you take off the panel. Unless you leave the grease there to hold it against the tiles. A photo might help with suggestions.

Bath movement causes tile grout to crack?

If the tiles have become attached to the bath as you suspect then when you fill the bath they will be pulled down so it might be worth trying to fill it then re-grout. I did read about a bodge on blown plaster where dilute PVA can re injected behind plaster\tiles to help key them to the wall...

White gloss - the work of the devil?

I'm going to start painting now, while all the dust in the world is stuck to your window sill! 8) What brushes would people here recommend? I've already come to the conclusion that Dulux seems to be the favoured brand by most people with any experience.

The Dreaded Artex - How best to Cover?

It's easy to remember -tytes come down, -mytes go up! :) I would opt for batten and board, at least I could get that part up in place myself and leave the final finish to the pros. Don't know how close the battens would need to be to stop any sag, I would guess every 400mm like a joist...

Uneven bathroom floorboards & laying ceramic tiles

Does it come to a point like a pitched roof, or is it a step? If it's a step you could just lay a thinner panel on one side to take up the difference. simon

    loft boarding / flooring requirements

Hi, I was told you will need a permenently fitted loft ladder, lighting and solid flooring from the hatch to the boiler so that it can easily be repaired. Now that is just what I was told, so it may be nonsense as I keep getting conflicting advice no matter what or who I ask  :D...
