Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I've been self-medicating a cold with hot toddies since mid afternoon, so it's entirely possible i'm reading it wrong instead.

Unless I'm misunderstanding him, none of the lives are testing as live.

    Dangerous electrical installation

I'm not, my fish comment was a highly amusing reference to another thread and nothing to do with yours, although I am now starting to suspect your take on the story is not quite the full picture. And I have no intention of putting up my full name on an internet forum, 'meerkat'. What an odd...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I hope there's access from above, if there's no live anywhere and all the old wires are there then one is probably damaged or pulled out of a connection somewhere behind your nice new plaster.

Fish, but don't worry she can shower at a friends house.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

Yep, you need an electrician. I'm guessing there is an errant wire that has been misplaced above the ceiling and not pulled through again by the plasterer. That would make what you're seeing two ends of a switch line, without the feed I was previously guessing was away in a Junction box...

    Extractor wattage

That's the usual practice if the circuit has the spare capacity. It's less than most light fittings.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

The switch connects one t'other and doesn't care which way round they are. Stick them both in the same terminal and go see if the red wire on the fitting goes live. And don't follow any of my advice.

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

If you have the live in C and no power reaching L1 or L2 on the far side of the switch, you have a broken switch. Confirm by connecting the two switch wires together and seeing if the light comes on. Don't do it live and don't follow any of my advice in any case, for the aforementioned reasons.

    Dangerous electrical installation

Unfortunately he does have a leg to stand on, however wobbly. You are voiding a contract, in the case of legal challenge the burden is on you to show why. And if you sue him for his mistakes, the burden is again on you to make the case, which is a seperate case. From your description it...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I feel I should point out at this stage i'm not an electrician and probably know about as much as you. Just stopped by for advice myself. So with the proviso that you shouldn't follow my advice, the switch should have L1, L2 and C. C is where the live goes, it connects to L1 or L2 depending...

Replacing ceiling light and dimmer switch (novice!)

I have deduced the one in L should be in S. There must be a junction box somewhere doing the job of the L terminal, the wire coming out of the ceiling is a switched live and a neutral so the red goes in the switched live terminal. The trick my dear boy, is that when you have eliminated the...

    Shower fuse and fishy smell!

Usually when ladies have a fishy smell a shower is the solution rather than the problem.

I often forget to pull mine, is that bad?

    Dangerous electrical installation

    1) You really see no relevance to your objection in the parts you cut out? 2) I hope the relevant authorities attempt a prosecution, if successful it would support his case for withholding payment based on a violation of his statutory rights.

    Dangerous electrical installation

I think you may find you legally owe the man some money, even if it does eventually turn out he owes you more. Your grounds for withholding payment would be a breach of your statutory rights, namely the right to reasonable care and skill in the purchase of services from a tradesman. A breach...

    different level line-Bad mistake

Mine makes a dot unless you put an attachment in, and I've always found the dot adequate for playing with the cat. On reflection, I possibly didn't need to buy a laser level.

    Bosch Tile Router, any good?

Would you mind sharing the hammer trick with a non tradesman tictic or jctiling, or is it one for the brotherhood of tilers? I have some tiling coming up in a bathroom that I thought I'd have a go at myself. I did my top floor shower enclosure a few years ago with aquaboards, tanking and all...

    different level line-Bad mistake

I use my laser level for playing with the cat. She loves chasing the red dot. Little tip there for anyone with a laser level and a cat.

what are my rights after being a victim of Dot & Dab til

This may be a little late, you said he was coming round shortly and that was yesterday. How did it go? With the agreement, I'd have written it as a letter rather than a new contract and been a little more succinct - the first paragraph covers most of what needs saying: the works undertaken...
