Structural question for DG window replacement

Hi, I have lived in a 1930s semi with square bays on front ground floor and 1st floor above it for 12 years now, gradually improving as time and money allow. I have always had my suspicions that the DG installation we inherited was suspect and now my suspicions may be (expensively) correct. We...

Connecting to Cast Iron Soil Pipe

Hello Everyone, I am currently in process of installing an understairs toilet and am at the point where I need to connect in to the existing cast iron vertical soil pipe which runs, conveniently, right out side the wall where the new toilet waste will exit the wall. I have done a search on the...

    Anyone know their cucumbers?

Hi All, Recently transferred my cucumber seedlings from the protection of indoors where they had grown in to good strong plants and into the greenhouse in good quality compost bags and now, though still growing, the leaves have gone all limp and lifeless!! Have tried watering but no real...

Got the pegboard....just need the hooks!

Thanks for your replies. Had thought about the racking supplier route but hadn't got that much wall space for the minimum 1000 piece order  Managed to source from my local independent proper diy outlet. even said they would try and get in some other hook types - clips and such. Cheers

Got the pegboard....just need the hooks!

Does anyone know where I may find a supplier of pegboard hooks with some sort of hook selection? Have found a couple of options on ebay but a bit limited really. DIYers across the pond have a fantastic selection!! Just looking to hang your standard hand tools, nothing outragious. Thanks

    Removing part of understairs wall

Cheers for your reply noseall. So I will need a lintel? As you suggest the stairs are going nowhere, will the lintel just be supporting the remaining part of the wall between the stairs and the top of the proposed door way? What kind of lintel would be required? In order to maximise door...

    Removing part of understairs wall

Sorry for the delay in adding more pics - camera woes. Added are some photos which may shed some more light on the subject for those of you in the building know! As an aside, the floor joists upstairs run perpendicular to the flight of stairs which i suppose gives more strength to the...

    Hotpoint Aquarius WM65

W/M drum has recently stopped spinning, either during the actual wash cycle or during the spin - if it gets that far, just seems to hang at the point where drum turning is supposed to start during the cycle. I have opened her up and given the brushes in the ac motor a nudge (power off of...

The picture with the basket (a hand me down honest  ) shows the under stairs. Basically everything is plastered in. If you can tell me what the 'strings' look like I will check if you are right.

    Removing part of understairs wall

Thanks for your replies guys. The 90 degree turn of the stairs is over the top of the current opening in the kitchen so I did wonder if most of the weight was taken at this point. You are right, headroom may be a little tight but its only intended as the loo to help kiddies with potty training...

    Removing part of understairs wall

    Damp halfway up external wall!

The bricks are reclaimed, and the same across the whole back face but this is the only spot where the damp appears :? The tiles are the completely flat type that link together, as opposed to the wavy ones (sorry not very technical). May be called Marley? How do i check the dry verge system...

    Damp halfway up external wall!

i didn't measure it, but its of that order. As I say, the original construction (dating back to 1937) seems a bit wayward!
