My new Grant Vortex oil boiler does not light

Oilman, You are right in principle but let me tell you about another two previous experiences with plumbers. My daughter called me and told me her living room carpet in her flat was wet and could I look at it. I was away on business at the time so I suggested she call a plumber. He came out...

My new Grant Vortex oil boiler does not light

Oilman- you don't live in Hampshire do you? I would be very happy to get you to set it up. My problem is that I have had such bad experience with plumbers and boiler specialists. For example, I have paid an "oil boiler specialist" man to service my old Potterton for several years. The...

My new Grant Vortex oil boiler does not light

The problem was cured after venting the manifold on the pressure connection. It is working fine now thank you.

My new Grant Vortex oil boiler does not light

I have just installed a new Grant Vortex 26kW condensing kitchen model (not system type) oil boiler and it does not light. The fan starts and after about 15 seconds there is a humming which I assume is the ignition sequence which lasts for about 3-4 seconds and then the burner lockout neon...

Should I worry about dumping a bathroom suite?

The first job I did when I moved into my current house a mere 17 years ago was to rip out the old suite from the downstairs bathroom and replace it with a shiny new one. Now my wife says it looks old fashioned and it has to go. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it! It occurs to me that...

Will 22mm Yorkshire fittings seal on 3/4 inch pipe?

Thank you to all who contributed. Much appreciated.

Will 22mm Yorkshire fittings seal on 3/4 inch pipe?

I apologise in advance as I expect this question has been asked before but I tried searching and I could not find it. I need to couple 22mm to 3/4 pipe. I have just used my last 3/4 inch olives and I can't get any more quickly. Can I solder 22mm Yorkshire fittings to 3/4 inch pipe, perhaps...

Can I rely on Kermi Radiator calculator software?

I calculated my radiator sizes (BTUs) based on the simple formula of room cubic capacity in feet x 5 for lounges and times 4 for bedrooms -adding 10% for windows etc, etc. I was quite happy until I read about the Kermi radiator calculator in this forum. It is a much more sophisticated...

Relative efficiency of finned vs unfinned rads.

You are forgetting the pressure difference along the pipe. According to Myson "The pressure drop across a single panel radiator is similar to that of an equal length of 15mm copper tube. For a double panel radiator, assume the radiator is two lengths of 15mm pipe connected in parallel. "...

Relative efficiency of finned vs unfinned rads.

Fundamentally I can't see why a TRV does not work with a one pipe system. What is the difference between a TRV and a manual valve? I can turn off any radiator with a manual valve without a problem. I actually fitted a TRV to one rad I had to replace which had rusted through and it worked fine...

    Best Oil Boiler

Thank you for your reply. Can you tell me what temperature differential is necessary? Also can you please enlighten me as to what a temperature scrolling boiler is.

Relative efficiency of finned vs unfinned rads.

Actually this is exactly what I had planned to do until I was told you can't fit TRVs to rads on a one pipe system which is what I have, although I still don't understand why this is so. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Relative efficiency of finned vs unfinned rads.

I want to replace some old single and double steel radiators. These rads have no fins and I would like to know what is the relative efficiency of modern finned single and double rads. In other words how much smaller would a finned radiator have to be compared to an unfinned one for the same heat...

    Best Oil Boiler

The old Potterton is currently in a small room on it's own so I was thinking about a floor standing Merlin 150-185 for example. The doewnstairs part of the system is 22mm pipe but upstairs, which was added much later, is 15mm. If the length of the pipe work means the return temperature is low...

    Best Oil Boiler

I need to replace an old oil boiler with a new one (fairly large detached house). I have a single pipe system so I am not going to fit a condensing boiler. Are there any particular boilers that are better than others?

Condensing boilers with single pipe systems

I think you have just convinced me to update the system to two pipes. Thanks for your help, it's not easy to find this kind of information anywhere.

Condensing boilers with single pipe systems

This part I understand. The bit I don't understand is why a 2 pipe system achieves it and a one pipe can't. Surely if there are enough radiators you can arrange the return temperature on a one pipe system to be 56 degrees can't you?

Condensing boilers with single pipe systems

    >>Even if you solve that, there's still the filth issue!! This is a very old system, presumably with at least some steel pipes and cast iron radiators. Chances are, that parts of the system are mostly FULL of sludge. If you put a low-water-content, high efficiency boiler on the end of that, the...

Condensing boilers with single pipe systems

I live in a 4 bed detached house (1935) which has an ancient Potterton oil boiler (it looks about 40 years old at least). This wonderful old boiler has given me good service for the last 15 years but last winter's oil cost was around 1000 pounds and this seems much too high to me. Also on any...
