Not DIY disaster related as such, but hilarious none the less

This was written by Gerard Hoffnung and he first recited it to The Oxford Union Society on 4th Dec 1958. I've heard this recorded and the way he read it is far funnier than just reading it. I've tried to find a link to an online recording but not found one yet!! David Found it!! Although...

    Horrible thought

Phew. A great weight has been lifted!!!!!! It has been one of those days. Digger cut through a live 10mm SWA cable - blew the REC fuse , leak in the bathroom..... Just a thought when I was looking around the forum for what to do with blown fuse, noticed (but already knew) that removing the...

    Horrible thought

Have just had a look at the end of the 3 core swa cable that has just been buried and spotted although it is for a single phase installation, the cores are brown, black and grey isn't this 3 phase cable? I know I should have checked, but as usual didn't. Have I got a big problem????? David

    Cable colours?

That's right, but surely Hager should be using the new colours by now. Presumably this now means that the installation now needs to be marked as "This installation has wiring colours of two versions of BS7671................................................correctly identified" even...

    Cable colours?

Just a quick question. Why with the new harmonized colours, has a new split load Hager CU just been delivered with red and black flexible links? David

    Mounting floor sockets

I am wanting to move a wall socket to the floor (with a a flip up cover). What is the best way to mount it? A dry wall box looks too small as the flooring is 22mm and not 12.5mm as plasterboard is. Is it OK to mount (securely!!!) a metal box in the cutout in the floor and use this? Thanks...

    Woodburner flue height

Refering to page 26 of http://www.odpm.gov.uk/stellent/groups/odpm_buildreg/documents/downloadable/odpm_breg_600285.pdf The horozontal distance from the apex to the chimney is 1500mm therefore the chimney height should be just above the apex to meet the regs, but should be 600mm? above to...

    Woodburner flue height

Just a quick one. I can't find the required dimmensions for chimney height. I think that if the chimney is under 1500mm horozontally from the apex it must be 600mm higher than the apex and if it is under 2300mm from the apex it must be as high as the apex. Is this broadly right. I know i...

    Which side is hot?

Is there a convention as to which side of the basin/bath/sink is hot. I generally use the right side for hot. Is that correct or is it upto the installer as long as continuity is maintained accross all outlets? David

    Waste pipe falls

Thanks for your reply, slight problem to overcome I think! I'm assuming that over a 2400mm run there needs to be a 60mm "drop" to give 1:40. Does the vertical drop from the bath outlet to the elbow that starts the main run help "push" water along and assist in improving from 1:80 to...

    Waste pipe falls

Sorry to not have made myself clear. I am about to lay the insulation and chipboard and run the bath/basin waste pipes through the insulation, but given the insulation is only 50mm thick the fall will not be very much given a 38mm waste pipe. Whats the best thing to do? Pack the pipe up to...

    Waste pipe falls

What is the best way to create the correct fall for waste pipes (38mm & 32mm) draining baths & sinks under a floating floor (22mm T&G chipboard on 50mm kingspan) do you assume that the run under the floor on top of the slab is level and that the "head" above it is sufficient to cause flow or is...

    Kingspan gives quie a kick!!!!

We have a farm, and the other day I was moving some sheets of Kingspan left over from a previous job to use on another one and I happened to brush the sheet against one of our electric fences. Next thing I know I had thrown the sheet accross the yard and I was sitting on my ar*e. 6500V through...

    Leaky shower - HELP ASAP

Firstly switch the power off to the shower NOW before investigating further. Is the water dripping from the bottom of the "U" of the shower hose? If so this may be water running down from the broken head of the shower rather than from the inside. Try checking this first. David
