Also looks like the pipes in the boiler room are lagged in Asbestos , so i would be very careful what you disturb whilst rewiring as chances are the whole place will be lagged in it. Nick

Reusing an existing switch to light new ceiling spotlights

Admittedly the switch is dangerous but by looking at the junction box it has earths on the feeds and the loads , not the switches however, so dont go rushing around removing all the metal light fittings just on our say so. Get it checked out. The reason there are 3 lives in the JB is as ithe...

Reusing an existing switch to light new ceiling spotlights

BAS the switch cables most likeley do not actually have earth cores in them. There was a period of time where three core and earth cables and some twin cables were sold without earths , and only feeds and loads to lights were wired with twin and earth. I think its quite harsh to say that the...

MMmm Double pole fusing, how long ago was that outlawed??? I do hope your client has made sure his buildings/liability insurance is upto date as that lot is a fire just waiting to happen, or someone is going to get seriously hurt from trying to work on that lot ., Still its nice to see how...

    Installing power in loft

Whenever we wired a new build house (before the boom in sky tv) we always used to wire a 2A socket for the tv amp off of the lighting circuit ,even if not required at the time of installation it was always there in case. Nick

    emergency lighting diagram

Personally i would wire the neon to indicate that the emergency lights had been put into 'test' as sometimes its difficlt to tell when they have been turned to emergency. Apart from that i see no problems in your diagram. Nick

Please help! Wiring for electric oven...

Chases in the wall have to fall within safe zones, for a socket that is directly above or below in a line vertically or horizontally from the outlet. Your chase is in no way compliant with this rule. Not to mention the capping HE installed is nt in the zone either. As tony said you need to get...

Please help! Wiring for electric oven...

Sorry but that was no 'Electrician' you have employed, I guess the socket was a single and higher up the wall than the newly chased double below. Has he extended the wires , if so how ? The plastic capping is not in line with the old capping so therefore takes the cable outside of the safe zones...

    MK Fish Key

The other end of the fish key fits MK Tamperproof fuseholder screws, basically just a slotted screw but with the middle bit filled in still . Most commonly found on the MK fire alarm isolator spurs such as the link below http://www.electrika.co.uk/products/m/man-0290/pdfcat/mk-47-200.pdf...

Transformer question - Can I replace...

Things have moved on now, i remeber as an aprentice in the 90s still installing them and then suddenly they became old fashioned and individual transformers were the way forward . Nick

Transformer question - Can I replace...

Electronic transformers as mentioned above are basically a switch mode power supply and are not designed to have excessive leads wired to them , they do not cope well with volt drop and cannot maintain the voltage over distances . Nick

Transformer question - Can I replace...

In this situation , unless the cables are relativeley close to the transformer then No its not a suitable replacement for the original, I would suggest you get the circuits Earth Fault Loop Impedance checked which may allow you to use a C type MCB which should not trip under the short duration...

    Shower for old neighbour.

I stand corrected it has been a few months since i handled a bit of 10mm, but as we do not know the age of the cable or even if it is a copper cable then there is still the possibility that the cable is larger than its modern day counterpart, Remeber older twin and earths with stranded tinned...

    Shower for old neighbour.

How does the saying go never assume as it makes an ASS out of U and ME 17.1mm across is NO WAY a 10mm cable, thats more likeley a 6mm . a 10mm is more like 25mm across the flat. He needs a new fusebox really, or to comply with current regs on the shower, just install a small 1 way RCD...

    Burning smell

Have you called them yet ? I for one would suggest that if you have not done so, then do as ricicle has said, call their 24hr emergency number. A loose neutral with overheating especially on such a small load as a dishwasher could petentially catch fire , not trying to be over dramatic here, but...

Would Neutral - Earth Ins Res of 5.0 Trip a breaker

When he did his Test, did he make you unplug everything on the circuit or did he do that ?? if neither then its more likeley to be a faulty appliance rather than a cable/wiring fault. Nick

help please - tiles not sticking

Tubbed adhesive is no good for tiles of that size, should have been powdered adhesive,Plasterboard is not an ideal substrate to tile on, would have been better to remove and redo with aquaboard or similiar. My advice would be remove them all and start again   one good thing is...
