Relying on loads not being able to overload

Yes, you are right John - you wouldn't 'bat an eyelid'. But you wouldn't contemplate hanging 1mm off a 50A MCB, as you know, because it would fall foul of other design criteria......so not entirely sure what you are saying Old Bean. Regards

Relying on loads not being able to overload

Yes, you are right guys - I had used a nominal voltage of 230V instead of the 240V that the shower is rated at - so, as you say, the point I am trying to make is made by substituting a >10Kw shower. Regards

Relying on loads not being able to overload

I don't think anybody would out of choice. However, what about a new 9500W shower as a replacement for, say, 8.5Kw shower fed with 6mm² T/E ? 45A MCB not available for the make of CU that you have. Ref method C stipulates max of 47A. What do you do, tell customer he needs 10mm² OR fit 50A MCB...

Relying on loads not being able to overload

I think the original fault must have severed the CPC and left the line in contact with the studwork but the metal stud work was not sufficiently 'earthy' to pass enough fault current to trip the MCB? Otherwise cannot picture it. Regards

Relying on loads not being able to overload

Hi John, Why don't you pose this question on the IET forum? I must confess to having the same concerns as you, originally. However, once I understood that most motor circuits have their own overload protection control gear and that the chances of equipment such as showers and immersion...

    Anyone know what this is?

As Owain says and, where is this green component mounted in relation to the fridge door - that is, is there a chance it could be a reed switch operated by a magnet on the fridge door? Just a thought. Regards

Hi EFL, Understand it's a Combi but the customer insists it can have HW timed. I am not familiar with this boiler, have told him that HW is heated on demand but he still wants the HW part of the timer wired in. The only way of doing this would be to disable the whole boiler whichcwould...

537.1.4 A main linked switch or linked circuit breaker shall be provided as near as practicable to the origin of every installation as a means of switching the supply on load and as a means of isolation. For households this would need to be a double pole switch. The point being that...

Did the house have storage heaters? If so, what you can hear could be an old electro-mechanical time switch cutting in/out. Any pictures of the meter and consumer unit? Regards
