    silicone over grout

I think the silicone is the least of your problems. Tiling on wood, in a shower??? Hope you're not standing in it when it comes down!

Shower installers used Dowsil 796 for PVC U, Glass and brickwork

If done right, neutral cure silicone will be fine. it is more flexible than normal silicone so will stretch better if there is still movement around the shower area, its has a better bond strength and doesn't smell of vinegar like normal acetic cure silicone. Only downside I can think of is it...

Any tips for removing 2 layers of tiles?

Either will work. Just the weight that's different. Heavier the hammer, harder the impact.... and the more it hurts your fingers when you miss :)

    Tilers rates

From an "ex-tilers" point of view. Justified impression based on your experience, but probably not fair to tarnish ALL tilers with the same brush, as there are rogues in all trades. To be honest, it sounds like you were just really unlucky to get a couple of knobheads or cowboys who have a...

    Aquapanel in shower enclosures

Oh dear. I don't think Knauf are up-to-date with the latest British Standards! BS5385 Part 1, 2018: 6.1.1.3 - In wet areas, e.g. showers, wet rooms and steam rooms, substrates should be protected with a suitable proprietary tanking membrane system. The likes of Aquapanel and Hardie Backer are...

To Tank or not to Tank

For those who aren't aware, all adhesive manufacturers will only guarantee their products on the condition that the relevant standards for tile tile fixing are followed, namely BS5385. Don't blame them really, there are so many cowboys around that cut corners, ignore instructions and leave the...

Payment for tiler (withholding payment) query.

Wood in a bathroom, marine or not marine, can sometimes be dimensionally unstable because of moisture and humidity so should ideally be over-boarded with a cement backer board (like HardieBacker) to minimise deflection and lateral movement. 15-25mm gap? what a complete crock! sounds like he...

Marmox Boards, Wetroom Former - Which first?

Personally for me, it would be former first, then boards on top.

    Which adhesive for 300x600 ceramic?

Paint's a problem. that needs to be scraped off (no adhesive manufactures will guarantee their products on painted surfaces). with the paint off, if it's skimmed, prime it with a diluted SBR primer (not PVA) and fix tiles with a powdered cement based adhesive. If you are tiling a shower, the...

    Primers

Yes, both are acrylic primers. Almost identical products other than the label.

12mm Ply + Cement board + Tiles on stud wall

Whether the studs can hold the weight depends on how well the studs are fixed. Hardie can hold 100kg's per square metre when fixed to studs, so assuming the studs are fixed correctly, no problem. It will take the weight easily. If the area is subject moisture and humidity, ditch the ply! Its...

    Homelux wall/floor matting

I'm fairly sure, the difference is that the floor version is dual layers giving it decoupling properties to cater for lateral movement in the substrate. The wall doesn't. Personal i'd use the floor for the floor and the wall for the wall to keep the guarantees.

Awwwww.... i can feel the love :)

    New grout different colours

It looks like effloresence (salt residue). Normally happens if there is too much water in the mix or excess grout wiped off too soon or the sponge was too wet. Should clean up easy enough using a mild acidic grout residue remover, like the HG Extra or LTP grout stain remover.

12.5mm Plasterboard and 12mm Hardiebacker on same wall (bathroom)?....

Think you might want to take a second read of that link: Moisture resistant is not water proof! Ok so you could argue that there may not be quite as much moisture ingress from a standard shower cubicle as there would be in a wet-room (only difference being water hits the floor rather than a...

Mapei Eco Prim Grip - any good?

    1. Eco Prim Grip is awesome stuff to use and offers a good key to smooth surfaces. 2. I wouldn't be using that in your situation. I'd also be ripping the existing tiles off. Do you know what the original tiles we fixed to? i.e plaster, plasterboard, render, backer board? How heavy are the...

Tiling comedy of errors. Help needed.

Don't put yourself down to much. We've all had to learn it one way or another, but experience is generally a better teacher than any video posted by someone who thinks they know better.

Tiling comedy of errors. Help needed.

I've not read the whole thread but the plywood is going to be the route of you problem. You also sealed it with PVA??? That is also a huge colossal NONO! To be honest you are very lucky that those tiles haven't come off and injured someone. So a couple of things to note...... 1. Plywood in wet...
