12mm or 18mm OSB on roof.

I’m building a garage with a trussed roof. Trusses will be at 600mm centres. Slate covering. Rather than having the breathable felt underneath the slates exposed to the inside of the garage, I’m covering the trusses with OSB3, then putting felt on top of the OSB. I was worried I’d damage...

Untreated trusses. How long will they last in the rain?

I’m about to order some trusses for my garage and the quotes have all come back for untreated timber. I’ve not done this before but I assumed they would be treated. I mean, it’ll take me a couple of days to get the roof watertight. The weather’s about to get a bit rubbish, so I’m wondering...

Bigger than what? What he guessed a structural engineer might suggest? :)

Blockwork plan. Garage wall, with windows.

Fantastic! Thanks. I'd looked through part A before but missed that half-page, which is to exactly what I needed. The above fails, marginally because of rule 4. (The supports between the windows are too narrow, which is what I was worried about.) Revised to three larger windows, with...

Blockwork plan. Garage wall, with windows.

Bump! Guess it looks ok then?

Blockwork plan. Garage wall, with windows.

Anyone have any opinion on my planned blockwork layout for a garage wall? It's just a single skin garage wall. The blocks are 140mm wide, rather than 100mm so there shouldn't be any need for piers. I was slightly worried that it might be unstable due to the large amounts of windows and...

Tamping a slab 4.7m wide. One section, or two?

Thanks for the replies. I'd rather keep this as simple as possible. It's a 4.7 by 5.7 meter slab so it's not a massive area overall. I'll have nothing else to do that day, so I'll be able to spend a while levelling it. I think I'll just do it as one. I've got a volumetric mixer coming, so...

How level does a base have to be under the DPM?

Yeah, this is my first DIY attempt, so in hind-sight I should have bought more hardcore and used less sand. But it’s done now, and if it cracks it’s not going to be the end of my world :) There’s no slope underneath the slab, just a little step. Even my neighbours bag of sand wasn’t quite...

Tamping a slab 4.7m wide. One section, or two?

I’m about to pour my 4.7m wide garage slab, within a blockwork retaining wall. Can I level/tamp it down in a single section with a piece of wood (4.8/5.2m), or will a slab that wide require me to put something middle and tamp it in two sections? By that I mean just tamp it in two sections and...

How level does a base have to be under the DPM?

Would need too many trips to get small bags from a shed, but my neighbour has a whole bag of soft sand he's not using! Will that do? Was using sharp to start with.

How level does a base have to be under the DPM?

Compactor has to go back on Monday morning. No-one seems to be able to deliver me any sand before then :(

How level does a base have to be under the DPM?

I'm laying sand in my garage base before laying a DPM. I've not got enough sand to fill it until it's completely level, and I can't get any more until after I've given the compactor back. I can level it out around the old base, but that'll leave a step of about 50mm. 1. Am I going to be...

    Bricky mortar mix.

Excellent. Cheers. I'll not bother with the lime them. It seems to be that it's either a plasticiser or for brickwork that's exposed to harsh weather, but I've got a separate plasticiser and the blockwork will be covered in cladding anyway. Thanks

    Bricky mortar mix.

I'm about to start a garage using a 'bricky', and their website suggests a mortar mix including lime. Not many mortar mixes seem to include lime (as far as I can see). Is it really necessary, and what does it achieve? They don't explain why on the website. "Mortar Mix - 6 part building...

    Bootlace Ferrules

I have those crimps and ferrules. Not much to say about them TBH. They work well :)

    Marley Thrutone. 600x600 or 600x300?

Ah. I see now. Thanks. I'll just stick with the 300mm width ones. Cheers for the replies.
