    Mains fire/smoke detector options.

Three floors: * cellar (utility room) : smoke detector * downstairs (quite open plan) : heat detector * upstairs : smoke detector That sound reasonable?

    Mains fire/smoke detector options.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be honest; I don't really know. Diynot is usually my first stop on the road to finding out. I think you guess correct though, so probably smoke alarm. I had assumed that if the power to the alarm went off, the alarm would bleep (on some kind of battery) until...

    Mains fire/smoke detector options.

I'm looking at fitting mains powered smoke/fire alarms. Standard domestic situation. I like bacon, and don't mind spending a few quid extra in order that I never again have to clamber on a chair while hung over, trying to cover my ears, pressing a button that seems only vaguely responsive...

All RCBO Consumer Unit - Hagar vs. Curve vs. MK

Nothing at all, other than the fact I wanted the extra room above the RCBOs, and I liked the earth/neutrals being on the left/right rather than obstructing the cables entering the box from the top.

All RCBO Consumer Unit - Hagar vs. Curve vs. MK

Good good. It's annoying they only do the RCBO unit in 11 way :( I was considering an EAD12/15, as if I add mains fire alarms, and a bell transformer, the EAD11R will be full. As an aside, what are people's thoughts on bell transformers? I'm guessing it might be easier to just get an...

All RCBO Consumer Unit - Hagar vs. Curve vs. MK

As an update, I'm going to go with the Memshield EAD11R, with the Memshield 3 compact RCBOs. It's not particularly well publicised in the MEM catalogue, and it's hard to find many references or pictures of it online. The best pictures I can find of it are actually from an eBay auction...

100A DP isolator for SWA. Any recommendations?

I'm installing a consumer unit in a new location, about 4m from the existing meter/cu. The meter tails won't reach. I'm planning to fit a 100A DP isolator near the existing meter, and use 25mm 3core SWA to supply the new CU until the transport/meter people can be arranged to move the service...

Wood burning stove - 'treated' wood?

Well, maybe at some point, but after that a lot of it was outside for tens of years. The last two years it's been stored in a dry garage.

Wood burning stove - 'treated' wood?

Err. I just meant wood that smells nice. Perhaps there's something about Rosewood that I don't know?

Wood burning stove - 'treated' wood?

Hmm. I hadn't thought of burning through it a bit at a time, mixing it with regular logs. Thankyou.

Wood burning stove - 'treated' wood?

OK. Sounds like the painted stuff is a nono then. Any strong opinions on the fencing that was treated? (There's a HELL of a lot of that)

Wood burning stove - 'treated' wood?

I have a whole garage full of random wood from renovating a house. This includes some wood with bits of paint on it (1 of 4 sides) and wood that was part of fences and hence probably 'treated' in some way upwards of ten years ago. What level of hell will I end up in if I use this wood in my...

Loft lighting and socket circuits, on plugs. Allowed?

Ah. OK. I worry a little about making any fixed circuit live before it's been inspected (even though I can perform the regular tests). I may do that if it takes a lot longer than I expect it to, or the GF gets too stressy about having to use lamps. Thanks a lot for all of your input.

Loft lighting and socket circuits, on plugs. Allowed?

Ah. It's twin and earth. The flex that runs to the plug, but the circuits, for the most part, are t&e. So that's why it's disallowed? No fixed non-trivial t&e, only flex? He was suggesting there was nothing stopping me wiring my lighting circuits (upstairs and downstairs) and running them...

Loft lighting and socket circuits, on plugs. Allowed?

Electrician across the road is coming over to disconnect the old circuits (only two, sockets and lighting) and put a couple of RCD'd sockets next to the existing consumer unit. The existing install will be dead, apart from these two sockets. (new CU is going in a different place) Cheers...

Loft lighting and socket circuits, on plugs. Allowed?

:? I'd go further than 'almost certainly', but that's not what I was asking about. He's put sockets and lighting throughout his loft, with the circuits being pretty permanent, but they're powered from a socket. He's not touched the consumer unit. I will install a new consumer unit. He's...

Loft lighting and socket circuits, on plugs. Allowed?

I was speaking to a colleague about his loft lighting and sockets. It emerged that he put them in himself, but said it wasn't notifiable as the sockets and lighting circuits are just plugged into a socket in the hallway. That seems a bit wrong, but I don't know what (specifically) would be...

All RCBO Consumer Unit - Hagar vs. Curve vs. MK

You seem to be able to get them from here, and they seem _extremely_ cheap. £11.99?!? http://www.electricalcomponentsdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Compact_Mini_RCBO_Circuit_Breakers.html They don't seem to do a compact 40A though. Would 40A require larger internals? Also, bizarrely, 6A, 10A and...
