    Drilling into Patio Stone

How do I drill a hole in patio stone?! Do I need a special drill bit as I don't seem to be getting anywhere!! One other questions... Is it okay to base up a patio with a concrete mix and then use a combination of sand and cement to lay on top for the patio to sit on? Thanks, Simon.

    SWA Junction box?

Lots of threads on here talking about outside electrics and saying that SWA should be terminated in a weatherproof metal junction box. I need to join 2.5mm 3core SWA into a 13a switched FCU that is already fitted in my kitchen as a spare. My next door neighbour's electrician simply cut the...

    Earths (with picture)

Sorry didn't explain it very well. From above it's 1.5mm cable off the lighting circuit. There are two cables because it went back up into the loft and the second cable fed the extractor fan by the window. In the earth that comes from below (appears from the right side in photo) there are...

    Earths (with picture)

The shaver socket was just removed from our bathroom, and an earth cable from the floor below was found coming up into the shaver unit. On inspection there were six earth wires within the sleeving. Couple of questions...At the moment as a temporary measure a junction box has been put in...

    Garage power (groan!)...is this ok?

You shouldn't jump to conclusions. At what point is the Part P threshold crossed when an uncertified electrician does the hard work and leaves the certified electrician to finish the job? It MAY surprise you that some people come on here to find out how a job should be done PROPERLY, even by...

Ahhh, okay. That explains that! I'll go ahead with what you suggested and will post back when it's finished. Many thanks, Simon.

    Garage power (groan!)...is this ok?

I'm sorry to ask a stupid question now, but I'll do it anyway. I know that a spur mustn't take more than 13A, so the TLC 13A RCD Spur I thought was very good, does it not prevent the spur from going over 13A? If I put a mini CU in the garage, like this one...

    Garage power (groan!)...is this ok?

How do I get the RCD fitted in the kitchen?! And why does it have to be in the kitchen when the garage is only 4 metres away? Simon.

    Garage power (groan!)...is this ok?

I was going to terminate the SWA in a metal box in the garage and leave the tails of the SWA long enough to take it into the 13A RCD Spur. After that I was guessing that a junction box would be sufficient to take wires up to a switch and a light as well as feeding a socket in the garage...

    Garage power (groan!)...is this ok?

I know there's a million threads on garage power as I've just been reading them all! Am I ok using this RCD Spur from TLC off my kitchen ring main using 2.5mm 3core SWA? http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CM4904.html The garage is only 4 metres away and I only need to power a light...

Is this allowed? Light fitting (with pictures)

As I said, I don't know the regs myself. But I thought that the earth should be available (it isn't) and there should be red sleeving on the live wire? Also having a bit of unprotected connector block stuck in the ceiling is against regs? This is a bathroom afterall, and above it is another...

Is this allowed? Light fitting (with pictures)

Sorry I just noticed that you said I shouldn't use chocbox? Why not?! Also I'm no sparky, but is there going to be a junction box if the live wires are currently stuffed into a bit of terminal block? Doesn't that mean a junction box hasn't been used?? Simon.

Is this allowed? Light fitting (with pictures)

Above the bathroom is another floor, so I can't go into the loft and the floor above is laminated so I can't take the floorboards up!! Will it be possible to pull the wires up and out and take them out of the hole in the joist or is that too difficult? I'm now wondering what the electrician...

Is this allowed? Light fitting (with pictures)

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to change the bathroom light fitting in our newly built home. I've got a nice new bathroom light as I wanted to change the standard "globe" light that the builders put it. My problem is when I took their light down I saw this...: No earth, no red...

Just wanted to say had a problem with some draughty inward opening lounge doors. Since solved having come across this great company's products: Exitex http://www.exitex.net/ Very high quality draught and rain excluders. I've got nothing to do with the company (they're Irish anyway) but...

    Bulbs popping

Just to make you laugh (and I'm not making this up!) the replacement bulb (another Luxx off the same batch) lasted just two days!! This light is switched on once at 5pm and goes off at 11pm with no switching in between. I'd like to think it's the bulbs in this case...but as I said I thought...

    Bulbs popping

The bulb: Luxxx 15W 108mA 220-240V 50/60hz I thought all UK supplies were the same? I'm connected to Seeboard, but I can't find the supply voltage on their site... Is it just one of those things or is there a problem somewhere? At 3 quid a bulb I thought I was avoiding cheap rubbish...

    Bulbs popping

I'm finding my bulbs keep popping after just a few weeks....now I changed them for energy savings bulbs from Maplin (made by Luxx) with 8000 hours life, and I've just had one go after 4 weeks! What's the point of paying extra for an energy saver when it goes just as quickly as a normal light...

    Thermostats with TRVs

Well I guess I should post about the practicalities of having a roomstat in the warmest room in the house. First this is a townhouse with three floors, and the living room is on the middle floor. The living room is not huge, but still has two radiators. It also has doors that are kept closed...
