you definately could do with some form of sub base as a slab those dimensions will definately crack maybe if you took it down to 500mm with plenty of mesh you could get away with it. even if you just use some balast and compcat it it will help

When building stud walls on site the studs (uprights) are 600mm centers, thats when using 12.5mm board. if your going to put hardboard over is id just like it with well treated ply with a nice finish and then just varnish it. or even get some tounge and groove and have a sweedish sauna effect...

Also when you laid id did you knock the air bubbles out in any way?? as these can also cause cracking

I know the chippys on the jobs i work on get 20-25 quid for fire doors. Got a quote off them for 5 doors at home and they said 100 quid.. so cant be that bad

agree with paul.. get a hamer and bolster and strip it carefully... your may be lucky and the brick work beneath may be good enough to paint.

Brick acid and a wire brush ;) The pressure washer will wash out your joints in the brick work and erode the stone.
