You could try a reinstall of XP, but only if you get the option when selecting to install (where the options are from booting off CD).
Could try pressing the R for repair when the option appears. Then try FIXBOOT then FIXMBR and then chkdsk /R. If they don't work then you will need to try the...
Try getting the latest driver from Acer. We had an issue with some of our HP laptops at work, where the music that plays when you login to XP sounded a little too fast. We knew it was the driver, just never updated to the correct one :lol:
From the villages affected, or are they miles away? I know what you're saying, most people will be buying like morons, but if their homes are flooded then surely their local shops are too.

Well.... I'm sure most of the sparks on here may know what this is, but when my Dad took a light fitting down for me today he pulled this out and said he hadn't seen one for about 30/40 years when he had taken loads out. reckons it must be near 60 years old.

I have an old fuse board with fuse wire in the cartridges :lol: will eventually get it changed.
Have you had to stamp on the brakes recently? I had a similar on a Merc I owned. The pyrotechnic in the seat belt had exploded apparently, and it did happen right after I had to hammer the brakes on.
Wire/pyrotechnic thingy majiggy replaced, sensor reset and job done.
