    Power in lighting problem

We need more info really. When you are getting 0v at the ceiling rose, where exactly do you have the two probes?

    Power in lighting problem

look up Potential Difference. If you have two wires into the same terminal, you won’t get a voltage. Try putting your other probe on the neutral or Earth terminal and you should see 230v. Hope that helps

    Crimps and tools

As already stated, there are no tools for doing all crimps. For doing pcb’s you should be fine with a bootlace ferrule crimper, and a yellow/blue/red crimper (sorry, not sure of the proper name) The main thing is to make sure the correct size crimp is used, and the conductor is all the way...

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

That is the point really, the homeowner doesn’t have to prove anything. They (the insurers/courts) have to prove that it wasn’t done competently

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

You are correct when it comes to you as a gas engineer doing work for the general public, but a private individual doing work for themselves knows what they are capable of. What percentage of the general public would honestly attempt fitting a boiler, or re-wiring a house? I am not registered...

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

I appreciate all the replies here, and it is clearly and quite rightly an emotive subject! I’ve done a bit of research and believe I’ve found an answer on the subject, or at least as far as the HSE is concerned. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pUbns/priced/l56.pdf Refer to page 14 paragraph 52, then...

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

Fair comment. Where do Gas Engineers stand with connecting the boiler to the power? The gas safe registered engineer that fitted mine ran a spur off a socket in my garage using cable that was lying around in my garage. Did he do an IR test on the circuit to make sure he didn’t adversely affect...

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

Didn’t mean to open up a can of worms here fella’s. The problem with forums is that nobody has any background info. I’m a time served mech/elec technician and have 10 years experience working on all kinds of machinery in a car factory. My Dad is a time served pipe fitter and welder and also has...

switched live wire bathroom fan fcu

It’s virtually impossible to tell what’s going on from that picture alone. Where do the blue, red and yellow (sleeved red) wires come from? That doesn’t look like a fan isolator either. More information needed, and most definitely should be getting the electrician back, if he is one!

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

I work in maintenance, so we’re all penned in a factory on shifts and don’t get out much haha! I’d swap it in a heartbeat to be a domestic spark out on my own, but as you’ve guessed, I don’t have many contacts, so I’d be starting with a massive handicap :(

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

What a refreshing post! This was my feeling to begin with, but the whole ‘law’ thing scared me tbh. I’ve RTFM and it’s exactly how I thought. By no means am I down playing it, but like you say, competence is the key. I know what makes a good job, and I’ll probably get myself a gas water gauge...

That’s great, thanks for the replies. I’m an electrician by trade, so I appreciate the importance of certificates etc. There is minimal pipework to do, and access is very good. I’d also be willing to drill all the holes etc, so yeah a days labour, plus a flue kit.

    Moonlighting Gas Fitter

Hi all! I had a condensing boiler fitted a few years ago and now need it re-locating. A friend of a friend is a British Gas engineer and ‘does foreigners’. Will this be covered by gas safe? If not, I’d rather go elsewhere to get all the certs. I’m having it moved from the garage to inside the...

    Reinforced bath choices

I'm at the 'no going back stage' of a bathroom strip out at home, and we have decided on a showerbath, probably L-shaped. Having had a cheap one from the big orange shed in the past that cracked within months, I want a decent one!! I am looking at the reinforced one's, but apart from Carronite...

    Boiler size confusion...

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm drawing up a short list of Worcester, Vaillant, Baxi and Ideal (had one in a previous house with no problems in 5 years). Size wise, I'm thinking between 24-28kW. I'll come back on when I've decided and report back :)
