    The slack is usually in the mechanism itself and not the handle. Open the door remove the handle and using a flat ended screwdriver turn the mech to see how far it turns until the door keep/hooks/rollers move.     yes you can. if fitting a wicks/ b&q then keep em glazed (packed glass in a factory)and just ensure they are 100 % level all ways. trouble I have had is anything DIY supplied is then getting the locks to work is a pain. if your willing to mess around with that then go for it.
