12v halogen kitchen lights not working properly ?

Hi I moved into my house 3 years ago. The kitchen has those 12v halogen spots - the ones flush with ceiling & spring clip to release the bulb. One of them is very temperamental - it works for a bit, then goes dead. If I wiggle it in the connector it works again e.g. push it all the...

Leaking shower tiles - advice please.

Thanks Damn, that's what I'm trying to avoid. Could I put silicon sealant over the offending grouting joints to minimise / prevent water escaping out the back ? If I needed to get the shower wall repaired who would best tradesman - plumber ? builder ? tiler ? Maybe they would need to...

Leaking shower tiles - advice please.

Hi I have a recurrent problem with a shower cubicle I inherited with the house. It is poorly installed, such that I've been getting leaks through the toilet ceiling below when water runs down the tiles at the back of the cubicle (about a cup or 2's worth). We first resealed around the...

Showerforce 1000XM died last night ?

Hi Just at the end of my shower, as I was hosing down the shower cubicle, the main trip in my fuse went. The house electrics refused to turn back on until I turned off the main shower power switch (outside the bathroom door). Now I'm guessing this is something to do with the shower...

Running boiler at full whack ?

Thanks After turning it up just fraction, the radiators are much warmer. My plumbing firm did say that the 50L is borderline for house. Maybe thats why it has to be near max ...

Running boiler at full whack ?

hi I have a 2004 Potterton Suprima 50L (with replaced PCB). If you run a boiler at or near full (on the front dial), is it detrimental to the boiler e.g. wearing parts out, lifespan etc. ? Presumably it costs significantly more in gas usage (all other things being equal) ? I ask...

Thanks - you're probably right. I guess time may tell ...

    Air in my system ?

The system is working, just has noises that weren't there before. It was really just whether the sounds I had noticed were likely to be due to air in the system, introduced by the work they did (or another cause). You seemed to disagree about the air (although this was prior to me noticing...

Basic question - why 2 cold water tanks ?

It's a "twin" tank - there are 2 tanks next to each other on the top. One feeding cylinder, the other the heating system. AFAIKT, the lower tank is solely for the power shower (the hot feed comes off the cylinder).

Basic question - why 2 cold water tanks ?

I don't know the answers - but it seems to work OK ! Maybe there are some connections not visible on the photo. I'm going to check which pipes lead where.

Basic question - why 2 cold water tanks ?

Have now discussed with plumbing firm. The top tank is F/E tank - the bottom one is for the power shower. He did say that it wasn't ideally setup as the top tank should be at least 500mm above the tank - but it shouldn't cause major problems (except maybe taking longer for this air to work...

    Air in my system ?

Well apart from this issue I meant - improvement in heating is much noticed & the radiators appear to fitted well. It has improved a bit - but still occurs occasionally. What else could it be (as it coincides exactly with this job) ? No idea - may be having a bad day (he also left the...

Basic question - why 2 cold water tanks ?

I think it may be the other way round ? The bottom tank definitely has the powershower cold pipe connected (as I recently isolated it to do a shower repair). Would that still be "OK" ? Whole system seems to work fine (apart from a few pipe noises when cooling/heating and the mild...

Basic question - why 2 cold water tanks ?

thanks Was mainly just curious By smaller, do you mean the bottom one ? Actually my main problem is the gurgling sound that comes every so often from the lower tank. Probably related to recent work I had done .. http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1093633#1093633 Someone...

Basic question - why 2 cold water tanks ?

hi Whilst exploring the source of my sporadically gurgling central heating system, I noticed what seems to be 2 cold water tanks. Incidentally, it's the lower one which the noise appears to be coming from. The hot water tank is immediately in front of these tanks. Here's a pic...

Should I leave the heating on all the time ?

thanks all - I'll leave it off at night then the pipes / tanks are pretty well insulated (mostly done by MarkGroup as part of insulation as they knew EasyVents were needed) could the v cold water be a reason for the boiler sounding as though it's working harder initially ?

Should I leave the heating on all the time ?

hi This morning, my boiler seemed to working really "hard" initially e.g bit noiser than usual. I could hear it vibrating through the bathroom ceiling (it is just above this). After the heating got going it has returned to it's normal quiet self. It's a Potterton 50L Suprima (with replaced...

    Air in my system ?

Thanks No I haven't bled that radiator as it seemed to fill OK and is working fine. I just thought that maybe it was that air that has now worked it's way into the system. Maybe it accumulates/is trapped somewhere near the pump/tank/boiler as this is where the noise comes from every...
