    Beware! Win 10 Upgrade Compulsory!

Agreed. Been using GWX Control Panel for months. Highly configurable, works a treat. Windows 10 nagging is but a distant memory.

Plasterboard - dot & dab vs. plaster on wall?

Thanks all for your inputs. As I now understand the options, I'm better placed to make a decision. Cheers.

Plasterboard - dot & dab vs. plaster on wall?

Thanks for your views. The bit I don't understand is how come 'dot & dab' is that much quicker to do? Doesn't the plasterboard require a skim coat of plaster anyway which would take time?

Plasterboard - dot & dab vs. plaster on wall?

Would appreciate advice on this issue... I'm about to have a small extension built onto our home. It's been suggested that the internal walls (constructed from concrete block) of the new build are lined with plasterboard using the 'dot & dab' method rather than being plastered directly. Can...

    Acrylic cupboard doors for kitchen

Just been looking into exactly the same thing, lacquer vs. acrylic-fronted cabinet doors (i.e. a sheet of clear acrylic about 5mm thick on the door front). I know little about the subject but having spoken to numerous suppliers, read various articles and nosed around on forums over the past few...

Pump (isolation) valves - what's the point?

Ah, I see. Thanks for the inputs. Yes, I'm familiar with the phrase, 'you get what you pay for', but I don't find it to be true much of the time. Seems like it applies to plumbing though! Until I replaced the pump isolation valves last week, I didn't even know these better products existed...

Pump (isolation) valves - what's the point?

For the third time in about fifteen years, I've needed to replace an outwardly leaking central heating pump isolation ball valve (in fact, both of them this time) yet throughout that time, the circulating pump continues to chug merrily away, hence my question. I've limited knowledge in this...

Double vs Triple Glazing - am I missing a trick?

Totally agree. I only have to look at my own circa 1987 (ish) Everest windows to remind myself of that (i.e. a basically sound product, poorly fitted). The two companies I've researched use their own installers and, if I remember correctly (must double check), said they don't subcontract out...

Double vs Triple Glazing - am I missing a trick?

Thanks for the info. The triple glazing info I've received from one company says the glass can be up to 32mm double or triple glazed (4/10/4/10/4 - I imagine) with the frame we want, yet when I check the same frame online (on the manufacturer's website) it says a max of 28mm glass (4/8/4/8/4 -...

Double vs Triple Glazing - am I missing a trick?

Could be. I narrowed down the choice of window supplier to two particular local fabricator & suppliers from a 10 company shortlist. Soon learnt that many supply the same product. I've been pretty thorough in checking out these companies hence narrowed it down to two I'm comfortable dealing with...

Double vs Triple Glazing - am I missing a trick?

Would appreciate opinions on this subject... Having asked around in the recent past, both on this forum and local window fabricators & suppliers, there wasn't much enthusiasm for triple glazed windows/doors fitted to typical domestic properties. However, I have quotes from two local...

Is it reasonable to view builders' previous work?

Indeed. We have had a qualified person on-board to date and he will prepare a 'tender document' for prospective builders. Any opinions or information I obtain from a builder's previous customers would be supplementary. I would have thought that few folk are naive enough to accept a strangers...

Is it reasonable to view builders' previous work?

Would appreciate any advice/guidance or opinions... Planning application for our ground floor, two room extension has been granted and we're currently working on obtaining building regs. approval so I'm ready to look for suitable builders. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to view a...

    Switching/Digital power supply

Indeed. I've purchased quite a few cheap electronic products either direct from China or via a UK 'agent' (such as this mini-amp). I think as long as one has realistic expectations, you can find some great value products. I take your point about fake chips though - I have a mini-amp module where...

    Switching/Digital power supply

Thanks for your replies. The amp is a SMSL SA36A Pro - one of those cheap mini-amps sold on ebay. It came with a generic 12VDC, 3.5A power supply (brick type). On many of these type of mini-amps there is some on-board smoothing (some mini-amps I've seen even accept an AC input, allegedly) but...

    Switching/Digital power supply

Can anyone please tell me if it's OK to use a power brick/supply that's sold as an LED power supply to power an amplifier? I need a 230VAC to 24VDC, 4A power supply to power an amplifier and the best value switching power supplies I've seen have been sold on LED lighting websites as LED driver...

Obtaining a quote for new windows & doors?

Hi God, I couldn't strike up a private 'conversation' with you - don't know why - hence this posting. Apologies if it goes against forum etiquette. Thanks for your offer in post#4 to give a rough guide price for replacement of my existing aluminium framed windows and sorry for taking so long...

Obtaining a quote for new windows & doors?

Thanks for your responses. Most helpful as it re-enforces my own views about obtaining quotes. Hadn't thought about the differences between local and national companies though - interesting point. Funny thing was, when he realised he wasn't going to secure a sale, he got a little agitated...

Obtaining a quote for new windows & doors?

Cleary, I'm naïve. I thought that agreeing to someone from a window & door manufacturing company calling round to "measure up and give a quote" meant exactly that - but I was wrong. The person who turned up was eager to agree a sale and wasn't interested in quoting for the work. To cut a longer...

Best way to repair tiled gable roof end?

Ah. I don't know if the fibre board is nailed to the batons but these concrete tiles don't have nail holes. Nor did they originally have any type of eaves clips and I don't think any were fitted during repairs by the roofers. The only thing that could be holding the tiles in place is the mortar...
