What type of cable needed to connect an external sounder

I've been converting a single storey barn for some years now, and as I haven't been able to chose which security alarm system to buy I've run the cables for the sensors etc throughout the building ready for when I do eventually make a decision. The final cable I need to install is for the...

Splitting a tv signal - at the aerial or in the house?

Thank you for that - running 3 additional cables through the 2" ducting sounds like a much better prospect than trying to squeeze a further 7 through it - there's already the TV, telephone, ethernet and alarm cables going through it. I can't get a signal anywhere in the barn (even in the...

Splitting a tv signal - at the aerial or in the house?

I've been converting a single storey barn now for some time and have put TV coax in to each room as I've progressed with the build - trying to make everything as future proof as I can. Planning won't allow TV aerials or satellite dishes on the exterior of the building, and as the house has...

    3 phase motor tripping

Thank you for the replies - I won't have a chance to have a proper look until Monday now, but I don't remember a burning smell and the motor hasn't seized. I phoned the company (who still make a version of the machine) and was quoted £260 for a replacement motor! I had quick a look at the...

    3 phase motor tripping

Please could anyone give me some advice before I start searching for replacement motors - yesterday my saw bench ran for about 5 seconds before tripping both its breaker and the RCD on the distribution board. It's one of three small identical 2.2kW 3hp 3 phase motors fitted to an old combination...

Earth connection for SWA and correct cable size?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it's a 3' high field fence - three rails and 6" x 3" posts. The cable has slack at either end where it is connected to junction boxes and has plenty of clips. Thinking that maybe I should have got him to use the existing conduit that runs the entire length...

Earth connection for SWA and correct cable size?

I've just had a couple of lights installed along my drive, the electrician has used 2 core 1.5mm SWA cable. I don't really want to question the work done, but is it OK to use the armoured sleeve on the SWA cable as the earth? Previous electricians have used 3 core cable, connecting both the...

Cable type & rating - outdoor lights

I've got an existing outdoor plug socket at the top of my drive supplied by approx 10 metres of 2.5 twin and earth from the garage. I want to connect a bulkhead type light at either end of the drive, which is 31 metres long, with the minimum of fuss. I was planning on running a cable along...

Where can I buy Flexibond glazing tape? (not Flexistrip)

Could anyone please tell me where I can buy one roll (only found it in quantities of 5 or 10) of Hodgson Flexibond 15mm x 2.5mm off white glazing tape? I've found the Flexistrip tape, but I need the Flexibond to match the existing half finished frames.

    3 phase inverter advice

I went over to my brother's yesterday to help fit a shelf for the converter and see the lathe up and running. Finally found out which model it is...

    3 phase inverter advice

Thank you for all of that - I spoke to my brother this evening, it's a Transwave MT21210B Rotary Converter with 415V output, no motor rewiring is necessary for any of his machines, and it's also capable of running machines with more than one motor. When he originally ordered the converter my...

Installing a pipe for an LPG hob

    Yes, another ebay bargain.

Installing a pipe for an LPG hob

Thank you, it's actually mentioned in the cooker manual! I was going to print a copy of the instructions to give the 'qualified person', but thought it might be a bit condescending.

    3 phase inverter advice

My brother took a look at the paperwork and it states that both the unit and plugged in device require adequate overload protection. I'm guessing that he just has to (get a qualified person to) put a breaker in a suitable enclosure either mounted on the wall behind the machine, or bolted to the...

Installing a pipe for an LPG hob

That sounds perfectly reasonable, I suppose it will help too that now there's an actual cooker to install.

    3 phase inverter advice

Thank you - I'm not entirely certain of the converter's actual rating, the chap who made it told him to fit a 10A motor rated MCB, the link was just the first one I came across for a Transwave rotary machine that looked identical to what he has. As usual, it would help if I actually knew what I...

    3 phase inverter advice

Thank you - this is the inverter he's bought (not off ebay though) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRANSWAVE-Rotary-Converter-4hp-3kW-Single-to-3-Three-Phase-240v-to-415v-/151045741634?pt=UK_BOI_Industrial_Automation_Control_ET&hash=item232b071c42 I'll get him to contact the people who made it.

How to connect six cables in one box?

I picked up a part used (90m plus) roll of 1.5mm 4 core fire rated cable for just over £30, including p+p on ebay - before the electrician told me that it wasn't necessary, I think I'd struggle to buy 90m of standard 3 core & earth at that price. I was thinking of writing a book, 'how to...

How to connect six cables in one box?

Yes, the barn is long and thin, with two log burners, one in the lounge, over 80 feet from the opposite end to the bedrooms. So if a fire did start in the lounge it would be a bit like a fire breaking out in a neighbours house - albeit with connecting doors!

Installing a pipe for an LPG hob

Thank you, but I was trying to avoid two call outs by doing all of the messy work first.
