    Enlarging fireplace, no lintel

Update. Lintel installed, thanks all However, having removed some of the bricks, I’m not too happy with what is behind. It looks like someone has previously hacked away at the cheeks of the fireplace, reducing the bricks by 30mm or so in places. They should be as wide as the first 3 courses...

    Enlarging fireplace, no lintel

Hi all, We are currently renovating our living room which includes enlarging the current small fireplace. I had hoped to find a lintel further up the wall but it seems there isn't one  A couple of questions: 1. Would it be worth removing more plaster, is a lintel going to be any...

    Leak above window

Hi, During the rain and wind at the weekend, water began leaking through the top reveal of an upstairs window, see pic. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Window Leak by mattrgee posted 29 Apr 2019 at 8:50 AM Outside window by mattrgee posted 29 Apr 2019 at 8:53 AM

    Plaster identification

Hi all, Any ideas what kind of plaster this is? The finish is grey and smooth, about 10mm thick, with an open texture. I was expecting to find gypsum after stripping the paper. but found this instead.

    Supply only uPVC doors

Hi all, Can anyone recommend a supply only uPVC/composite door company? Looking for a new back door but would prefer a door from a reputable manufacture such as Veka, Solidor etc. Rather than a Wickes or B&Q special. Thanks.

    Draining down central heating

Hi all, Could you advise on the correct procedure for draining down a sealed central heating system? I’ve done it once before out of necessity due to a leaking rad feed, but would prefer to know if there’s anymore to it? Should TRVs be open or closed? If closing TRVs, is it also worth...

    Bathroom: waste+joists=problem.

Update: I've figured out where the waste pipes join the soil stack and can now access the joints (see pic). In theory, I could run 50mm for the entire run of bath waste. However, the existing soil pipe boss is the previous size: 40mm. Could 50mm waste be stepped down to 40mm just before it...
