    STRAY INSULATION IDENTIFICATION!!!

I've never seen green insulation. Perhaps it was that protective packaging which consists basically of strips of paper spun together; no contamination there!

Replace few plain clay tiles with polycard?

It was quite common in 'the old days' to do exactly what you have described using tiles made out of glass complete with nibs and nail holes. If you're lucky you may find some in the salvage yards.

    side abutment how to??

You should be able to do this with soakers and a cover flashing see here If a secret gutter is required it can either be formed with lead (in 1.5 metre lengths lapped 150mm) details here or with preformed GRP sections which are available in 3 metre lengths from roofing merchants

    replacing roof batton

No misunderstanding; that's the way to do it. It would be worth looking to see what has caused the batten to rot though

I don't think it's too much of a job to grind it level look at this

    Mortar mix

Mortar made with sharp sand does dry harder and weathers better but it is almost impossible to work with because as soon as you try to trowel it up the water comes to the surface and it all gets a bit messy. Virtually all roof cement work is done with building sand and it is acceptable; a...

Water collecting in corners of gutter system

As the corners are unsupported it is normal for them to 'droop' slightly therefore holding water but this is not a problem if there are adequate falls. The water will not stagnate as it will either be washed away with the next rainfall or evaporate

    Great floor, but .............

WYL, the original finish certainly appears to be oil as you can see on cross section where it has been absorbed into the wood, so I can't see how it can be removed as we could only affect the surface. It is also not an option to sand the boards as we want to retain the brushed finish. Why...

    Great floor, but .............

No not at that stage yet WYL It appears to me that the wood has just been given an application of something to enhance the colour and a damp cloth removes or spoils that. I want to retain the colour rather than try to remove it.

    Great floor, but .............

Just laid 30m2 solid oak brushed and oiled flooring in my lounge and was extremely pleased with it. But it quickly became obvious that there was something wrong with the finish, it only takes a light wipe with a slightly damp cloth for the oiled finish to become 'washed out'. We obviously...

Can't get into Windows Live Messenger

It's Internet Explorer and I don't know what you mean about clearing the cache. It's a really strange fault, if I go to ebay.com I can log onto any worldwide site, (brazil, Ireland,Australia, literally all of them) but not UK

Can't get into Windows Live Messenger

Not that I want to - but my daughters do! This site seems to give us the worse problem but there are others. I'm on a talk talk broadband connection and generally have no problems with connection but sometimes just cannot log onto a site. Sometimes ebay just won't load; sometimes I can't open...

    Ridge Tiles

Look at this previous topic My comment is very relevant. It is an NHBC requirement that the end ridges are mechanically fixed

    Fastening ridge tiles

The key words here are differential movement The recommendation to mechanically fix the last two ridges (or 900mm) came about because of the tendency for the end ridges to be blown off. It became apparent that this was happening because the mortar bedding was cracking when the rafters/trusses...

    Clay roofing tiles

The delamination (spalling) of machine made clay Plain tiles is caused by water that is between the laps of the tiles (drawn there by capillary action) being absorbed into the surface of the tile then freezing, expanding and subsequently splitting the surface away from the body of the tile; this...
