Took double socket off wall and discovered 3x cables

Thanks for your reply. The house was built in 1959 and when most of the wiring in the house was changed when we bought the house in 2013, I discovered quite a lot of rubber cased wiring. I ripped any trace of the rubber out (we pulled all the ceilings down downstairs to make this and pulling...

Took double socket off wall and discovered 3x cables

Thanks plugwash, you are super helpful and diagrams are really useful. I need to spend a while digesting what you said, particularly about not needing to test live circuits.

Took double socket off wall and discovered 3x cables

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. Sounds like this is going to take some time! I've got a socket tester plug, that's going to be more useful than a lamp in this situation right? Out of interest, what tools would an electrician use in this scenario to figure out the wiring layout? Do...

Took double socket off wall and discovered 3x cables

Hello everyone, I was looking at changing the original double socket in the spare bedroom upstairs to a new MK one and at the same time add an extra socket to the left. We had most of the wiring in the house changed a few years ago and I was shocked by this (not literally). I can only presume...

Problems with zinsser bin, painting mdf

Thanks for your reply. If it doesn't pass the scratch test, what good is it how well Leyland sands if it doesn't protect the surface properly? I'm probably missing something here...

Problems with zinsser bin, painting mdf

I take it BIN is best for priming IKEA laminate particle board? What is so good about Leyland and what else is it good/not good for?

    Alcove cupboards, drawers and bookcases

What exactly sounds like a bad idea? Are you referring to the TV above the fireplace? There is a mantelpiece stopping heat from going straight up towards the TV if that is what you are worried about. If not, please be more specific.

Hey Foxhole, it's a real fireplace with a stove. The thing above it is a TV.

    Alcove cupboards, drawers and bookcases

Need Venetian blinds for wooden French doors

Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into that. In relation to the perfect fit system, wooden doors don't have a glazing bead that can be manipulated in the same way as plastic UPVC which is where my concern stems from.

Need Venetian blinds for wooden French doors

Thanks for your replies. I liked the look of the perfect fit blinds but when you look them up, it says: Cleverley utilising the otherwise redundant space between glass surface and the depth of the glazing bead, Perfect Fit Blinds™ are the complete solution when it comes to the majority of UPVC...

Building Regulations: Approved Document J & Hearths

I meant that the thickness of the subfloor is unknown. I expect it is at least 12 inches because I had to dig out some of it in another room downstairs to get to the mains water pipe. It's hard to remember exactly as the project has extended over a number of years.

Need Venetian blinds for wooden French doors

Hello there, I have two French doors which open outwards and require blinds. The French doors have 8 panes of glass and an arch at the top. They look like this: I need blinds which aren't going to swing away as the doors are opened and can accomodate the curve at the top. From the...
