    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Cowls were always on my to-do list, having seen them on other buildings. It's just having no knowledge and problematic accessibility. I'll progress the cowl angle.

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Am I sure? Well... no, I'll admit that. It's just I pinned it on when we had Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin - I thought that was in 2021... but I must be a little mixed-up as Google tells me they were early in 2022. (?) Anyway, we had water ingress throughout the building and the stains on...

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

I figured that was a joke... but I know nothing about these things, really, so I'm gonna ask... is that actually a serious comment that has legs? I can imagine I can get it up there, dangling around, but doesn't it then need screwing into the wall from the outside anyway?

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Thanks. Cowl it is. It's where my mind was heading. I'll just have to find someone who has the capability to get up 12m high. At least by keeping the current extractor I'll not have to worry about wire length / position - the ones connecting to this seem to be cut to almost the exact length...

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Maybe something like this 100mm with built-in backdraft shutter is my best bet? https://www.toolstation.com/airvent-100mm-low-profile-extractor-fan/p71737 I have no idea if the brand is any good. I've only previously heard of Manrose, Xpelair and um, that's about it.

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

This is only kinda plumbing, and very basic - I do apologise for that. I have a wall-mounted 10cm timer extractor fan in an upstairs bathroom. In the trio of storms we had a couple of years ago the driving rain must have come inside as water marks have appeared all over the wall, and remained -...

    Toilet conundrum

I don't feel that I've imagined anything. The first thing you stated was - a new fill valve is needed. The second thing you stated was also fit a new flush valve (basically swap everything inside the tank). No explanation or rationale of any kind delivered with either instruction / suggestion -...

    Toilet conundrum

I've been to check and it looks like an explosion happened - there's bits of porcelain everywhere, water all over the floor and more coming out of what's left of an inlet... Obviously I'm joking - it's absolutely fine - no hissing at all. I will keep a suspicious eye on it but I think it's...

    Toilet conundrum

Makes perfect sense.... sometimes you just don't know what you don't know. I spent well over 30 minutes just trying to get the flush valve out of its cradle. If I had a new seal to hand I would definitely have used it - but obviously it's not something I would have - and I had only a bit of hope...

    Toilet conundrum

I didn't criticise you (plural)... I've only criticised you (singular). Let's face it - you did offer poor advice (and with certainty) on this one, even as a professional. In fact you actually wasted my time by sending me down a wrong path. It doesn't take much to imagine you right here, making...

    Toilet conundrum

This is exactly the situation and the conclusion that I'd arrived at too. I think the test of keeping the fill valve locked into place was worth it (I don't know why this toilet doesn't have an isolation valve outside - probably to look nice?).

    Toilet conundrum

I don't want to be too cocky here - just in case I come a cropper later on, but I do reckon I've fixed it! I'll tell you what I did... 1) With the fill lever forced into the open (not letting water in) position, I managed to pull the flush valve out - it was some kind of Gerberit dated Mar...

    Toilet conundrum

"you need a new fill valve, mate, you're in luck, I've got it on me van... oh, it wasn't that" "you need a new flush valve, mate, you're in luck, I've got it on me van... oh, it wasn't that" "you need a new cistern, mate, you're in luck, I've got it on me van... oh, it wasn't that" "anyway...

    Toilet conundrum

You didn't know, though, did you? You'd have me replacing everything... "New fill valve is needed" ...is what you incorrectly first came back with. When questioned about that you quickly changed your story.

    Toilet conundrum

That's totally fair - I did ask that. But getting a Plumber is the default position, right? I would've ended up there anyway, without creating a post here. I actually wanted to learn something and that's why I went to the trouble of describing the issue here and showing a picture - to learn...

    Toilet conundrum

Ha... well - again - that's fair comment... but just know you took the time to respond here but provided me with no actual help. Of course I can get a Plumber in. That was always going to be the answer if I couldn't learn anything more. So you just said what we knew anyway. I don't need links...

    Toilet conundrum

All this is fair enough... I guess I can replace the whole toilet if needs be... but that doesn't make me any the wiser regarding the questions I've been asking. ;) I haven't learned anything... I've just been thinking about it and I don't know if my thoughts are good or way out-of-whack.

    Toilet conundrum

Thinking this through - or was it an overnight dream? - isn't it more likely the right-hand side that has the issue? The flush valve is it? If water is draining out of the tank - and not via the overflow - then isn't it more likely to be exiting through this valve? If so - how do I go about...

    Toilet conundrum

Oh, so it is a replacement part that's needed here... I was more worried about where the water in the tank had gone. Can I check... I thought the filling mechanism was just going about its job... the problem is that it is constantly being asked to do its job. After a flush the inlet valve does...

    Toilet conundrum

Hi all - if I don't provide everything needed to understand this, please just let me know and I'll find out. This is my second toilet, so there's no urgency, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it (boom-boom!)... the other day I noticed a gentle hissing sound coming from it and I took the top...
