    Strange smell in the mornings

Not really a DIY disaster but funny none the less. We've had the builders in since Monday. Foundations have been dug now for the new footings. The outside toilet has been removed and the sewer pipes exposed. I was out the back having a smoke before heading off to work. I heard the flush of...

    Matching Kitchen units

I'm looking to put an additional couple of units in my kitchen. However the kitchen was bought 4 years ago and the company no longer operates. I'm trying to find somewhere were I can match the colour and the doors (not too fussed about handles as I have some spare). I've tried tyhe usual...

Can I use this site to find tradesmen?

It would be a very useful feature. Looking at other sites which are suppose to find tradesmen for you it’s really hard to tell which ones you can trust these days with so many cowboys and rogue traders out there. I just want someone who can do the job well for what I class as value for money...

Decking post concrete in supports wobble :(

Looks like your question has already been answered above, but I jst wanted to throw in a warning about planning permission and building regs. The ledger can not be attached to the house without a 10mm gap between the house and the decking/frame. You'll need to use a bunch of spacers between...

    Putting up some fencing....stuck....

75x75mm post, 6x6ft fencepanel, 75x75mm fence post, 3x6ft fencepanel, 75x75mm post, 100x100mm post, 3x6ft gate, 100x100mm post, 75x75mm post, 3x6ft fencepanel, 75x75mm post. 1) Does this set-up/order sound ok? :? It's confused the pants off of me if I'm honest. Also if you are going...

    price of topsoil

Have you tried E-bay? So many people who dig ponds advertise on there for you to bag up and collect. Better for them than paying for a skip.

    replacing steps with timber decking

You can not have a timber frame or decking attached to the house without a 10mm gap. The deck needs to be no more than 30cm from ground level (i.e. the garden area) seeing as you have 3 steps I'm assuming that it would be higher than 30cm once finished. Best phone the planning office and ask...

Garden levelling - dig down or build up?

Not sure if you read Ellal's post, but to me that makes the most sense. If you level up you need to buy loads of top soil. If you level down you need a few skips. I've not seen the picture (blocked at work) but if the turf is in good condition strip it off and roll it up on both sides...

    Decking now requires planning permission.

I'm not sure if everyone is aware of this but there seems to be lots of post up recently about new decking. Please be aware that as of 1st october 2008. You now required planning permission if any of the following criteria in met: • Where the deck is situated within 20 metres of a highway...

Steps after planning permission is granted

My planning permission has just been granted but my arcitect is acting as my agent, I'm not sure if you have the same sort of thing or you are submitting everything yourself ?. The next step for me is to submit a full plans application and get an appointment with the building inspector, he...

Do i need more deck supports on this plan?

Forget increasing the number of slab. At 10' you need to get yourself some noggings in there. Use the staggered formation. i.e. first row 2' 4' 6' 8'. second row 1' 3' 5' 7' 9' third same as first forth same as second.

    Decking and handrails suggestion?

If you are only raising it 10cm, you don't really need handrails to be honest. If you did want some sort of boarder, you could always put posts with rope, but then I think that looks a bit naff, however some people like it.

    Planning stages

As far as I can see I've only ever seen stage 15 and stage 50. Stage 15 is "deciding". Stage 50 is "decided" oh and stage 55 is "let the client know" lol.

Excellent Idea, but I'd give it a few years just incase they get rumbled anyway and have to take it down.

    Planning stages

Just checked another coucil web site (i.e. not mine) and they don't use that system. I would have thought they would have some sort of standards between them, I guess not. Thanks for your repsonses anyway.

    pond - starting again

I've built a few ponds in my time. The last one I build was for my dad at his house. It's 25,000 gallons so a bit of a whopper at 33' x 16' and 8' deep. The stage you are at now where the water is nice and clear will not last for long unfortunately. Basically you have cleaned the filter...

    Decking handrail

If you don't want to or can't fully remove the nut and bolt, you can always loosen it so that you can slip a couple of U washers under the head of the bolt. You can get these in various sizes and they are used when you can not fully remove a bolt to fit a washer.

While we are on the subject. To help speed up the process of developing fruit trusses. Once you start getting flowers, give them a gentle tap each day to release the fertalisation.
