New boiler and flue, and some basic pipework - quote?

Simond - I've just about had enough of the ad hominem insults. Cloud cuckoo land? It was his quote, not mine. I'll be checking his CORGI registration and references in due course. Its called competition. Clearly this is a concept that many in the plumbing/GI trade have precious little...

    kitchen worktop

Set up a straight edge and run a router along it. As long as the router bit is sharp, you should get a clean cut line.

is mahogany still used in the trade?

There's no chance its real mahogany - the last load of 'real' came on the market a few years ago when an avenue of mahogany trees was felled to make space for a new embassy in Sao Paulo. It'll be a substitute.

New boiler and flue, and some basic pipework - quote?

Well, I certainly seem to have got a lot of people going!!! Thanks for all your replies. At least, some of them! The problem I have is the idea of paying a tradesman (which I am myself) nearly a thousand pounds a day for doing some very ordinary work. Being a tradesman, I have a realistic...

    T&G cladding in bathroom?

Totally agree with awbcm (I'm also a cabinet maker). I would further recommend green 9mm MDF T&G - green is more water resistant than normal MDF (doesn't de-laminate).

Gaps on skirting joints, pls help

Metallux 2 part filler is ace kit. Quite expensive but well worth it. Despite its name, it is for wood. Its all we use in my pro. cabinet-making workshop. You should definitely heed the advice not to mix up too much at a time as you don't get that long to use it, and NEVER put too much...

finish for recliamed pine floorboards Oil ok?

Hi Paul. Tung oil is good stuff - non-toxic, pleasant but not strong odour (salad bowl/chopping board smell), water resistant, heat resistant, solvent resistant (once dried), hard-wearing. The only downside in your situation is that it can make the pine fairly 'orange'. And it produces a...

New boiler and flue, and some basic pipework - quote?

Thanks Gavinda. Nearly 1K a day sounds expensive to me too! P'raps I should try BG! Already got me eye on the copper  !

    New bandsaw

£2K?!!! Good Grief! You could have pretty much any bandsaw you want for that. Record Power's largest bandsaw will meet your needs and only cost you £800. Single-phase should suffice, will be cheaper to run and won't require a wiring upgrade.

Alcove unit - construction advice for a novice

If you're planning on painting your finished article, then tulipwood (poplar) is the perfect choice for your frames. Its more stable and less resinous than redwood, and not much more expensive. BUT, you will be unlikely to find pre-machined tulip, and will have to plane it yourself or take it...

    make my own windows

Don't over-complicate this, mate. A window frame can be made the same way as any other frame - 2 or more uprights (stiles or jambs) and 2 or more horizontals (rails) joined with good old-fashioned mortise and tenon joints (mortises on the uprights). The sill can either be the bottom rail or a...

New boiler and flue, and some basic pipework - quote?

Hi folks, a newbie here. Just bought a house, and the existing boiler in the garage is defunct. I will have to get a new boiler and mount it in the bathroom, requiring a new flue to be installed and the boiler connected to the existing CH and DHW system (which is currently a vented system...
