    12 volt wiring

hi experts I'm planning on installing 3 x 3 watt led lights and possibly a usb charging point in an off-grid holiday let . They will be powered by a gel leisure battery via a controller attached to a solar panel. The runs aren't that long - maybe 3 to 5 metres each. I just wondered what size...

    the mystery smell

The small pipe just above the gutter is the vent for the soil pipe.

    the mystery smell

The utility room only has a sink and washing machine that share a trap and feed into a pipe which runs behind a stud wall and then into the soil pipe so nothing there to see really - I'll take a picture of the roof and send it next. The smell is kind of all pervasive and hard to pin down so...

    the mystery smell

No these seem OK and wouldn't the traps have to completely emptied to let smell through? I did just run water into the utility room sink to make sure the trap was full but the smell persists as long as it's windy outside.

    the mystery smell

Hi Experts This is something I've been trying to figure out for a while now and hoping there's an obvious thing I've missed before I have to start ripping into the fabric of the house. When the wind is blowing from a northerly direction (and only then) we get a sewage/drain smell in our...

    Trenching machine

Thanks everybody for your advice, I think the pedestrian trencher is the way to go for me.

    Trenching machine

I think I need to be at 750mm to avoid freezing and the one I've seen you walk backwards and the spoil is deposited either side of the trench. Just wondered how quickly it can move along. With 200m I need it to get a bit of a shift on!

    extending water 200 metres

Hi Experts I need to get water down to a field to supply a hut (sink only) and maybe a propane shower. I'm planning to use MDPE pipe to link to my existing outside tap. My question is will the diameter of the pipe make a big difference as I'm simply already teeing off from a 15mm supply? Will...

    Trenching machine

Anybody used one? I've got around 200m to dig to take a MDPE water pipe so only need a narrow trench. Seem a lot cheaper to hire than a mini-digger but wondered if they will be too slow or struggle in my clay soil. Many thanks Steve

    can I weld plastic HDPE?

Cheers Jack The fencing wire idea sounds like it might work for locating but how could you tighten - the nut will just revolve?

    can I weld plastic HDPE?

Hi experts I have a connector for an IBC which has lots of hairline cracks. It is made of high density polyethylene and it is the threaded cylinder which houses a valve. I don't seem to be able to buy one my size despite hours of internet searching. I don't really want to chuck a 1000 litre...

    cable confusion

Adrian - checked again there's definitely no VGA on the TV. There are some other mysterious slots (to me at least): Digital Audio Out (optical) LAN A USB port Common Interface I've also noticed that the HDMI label actually refers to 2 ports labelled 1 and 2 with the 1 then labelled DVI...

    cable confusion

Hi experts I've got a laptop with a VGA port but my TV has DVI, HDMI, scart and component (I've looked this up - I don't know these things) and I want to connect said laptop to TV - which is the best route to take in terms of cost and picture quality? Many thanks in advance Steve

    toilet cistern

The body is white and just the top is blue. The hole is level with the plunger hole and right next to it so I thought it was possibly an overflow as I couldn't see another function for it?

    toilet cistern

Hi experts Just fitting a new cistern on my downstairs loo and have a couple of quick questions: I notice the flush has a second hole in the top next to the hole where the lever pulls up the plunger - is this an internal overflow - haven't seen one like this before? Secondly, the inlet...

    hot and cold

Hi Experts a couple of questions for you: After reading all the advice on here I realise that I need to plumb in a new gravity shower with balanced hot and cold water pressures - my first question is how come my old bath which has one of those lever type tap to shower switches works fine with...

    Putting up Field Fencing

I used straining bolts (sometimes called hook and eye turnbuckles) on my fencing - very cheap and easy to use. Only a few quid each and simply tighten by hand and draws the wire together. My fence wires twang like a violin and have been up for several years. I've attached stock proof fencing to...

    cold water feed

I'm sorting out my gravity fed shower - currently it's just a mixer tap on a bath fed by hot water cylinder (pressure fine - tank in loft, bathroom on ground floor) and mains cold. I realise that I need to equalise the pressure for a shower fitting (manual or thermostatic) and my question is...
