    underfloor heating

Hi Experts Any opinions on makes of electric underfloor heating mats? They all seem to claim the thickest wire etc so are they all much the same or are there some to steer clear of and some to be recommended? I'm planning to warm a small tiled area in the bathroom. Your advice very much...

    extra landline for business

I need an extra landline dedicated for business use. Basically I want to know whether calls to my home are business related so that I can answer the phone appropriately. Is there any device or system to allow a different ring tone (via a different number) or allow the caller to select an option...

    fireplace bricks

Thanks Cannyf - advice and offer much appreciated, unfortunately I live in the far east (Norfolk) but the clay pavers might be the solution. The firebricks might also be worth looking at - cheers. I vaguely remember seeing something on tv about all the fancy brickwork on new buildings...

    fireplace bricks

I need to cover the wall behind my woodburner (the heat is too fierce for paint and even the plaster seems to crack) and wondered about whether to cut down bricks to thin faces using a grinder - I've only got a couple of inches behind the stove - and build a brick finish wall? This got me...

The life of plastic oil tanks revised downwards

My 8 year old tank has just sprung a leak (soap pressed into the cracks does a good emergency seal) but luckily was still within the 10 year guarantee period. The replacements however are only now guaranteed for 2 years. The guys who changed it over were full-time replacing these tanks and...

Can't AVG scan in safe mode

Just to report - didn't have a lot of luck trying to sort out the problem. Was able to scan using a downloaded Dr Webcurit and found over 50 nasties but after curing and moving still couldn't boot up in normal mode. Also couldn't connect to the internet in safe mode with networking for some...

Can't AVG scan in safe mode

No he's not wireless but the idea of downloading might be the way to go. Thanks for that Dave. I'll give it a go and hope it will be accessible to run in safe mode. Cheers Steve

Can't AVG scan in safe mode

Trying to sort out my dad's computer problem over the phone (not easy!) - seems like he's been hit with a virus and now can only launch his computer in safe mode. The problem is that he doesn't seem to be able to start a scan with his free AVG 8.5 in safe mode whereas I have the identical free...

    Best retro fridge

I'm looking to buy a retro-style freestanding larder fridge. I've ruled out Smeg as an expensive load of old tat and wondered about LEC or Baumatic or Gorenje (although this looks a bit plastic and cheap). Anybody out there have experience or an opinion on the best retro fridge? Your...

    a faint whiff

Thanks guys - it's an osma vent 40 - sealed it with a plastic bag and the smell disappeared so I think I can rule out the curry scenario.

    a faint whiff

I have an air admittance valve in my airing cupboard connected to my bath waste before it connects to my soil stack but I'm pretty sure I'm getting the faint whiff of the sewage. Surely these things only allow air in and not bad gases out? Could the valve be malfunctioning? Thanks for your advice

is it too much to ask?

I checked out the corners (which will be receiving kitchen worktop) for squareness and found them not to be perfect in fact a good 5mm and more adrift over the depth for a worktop. Is this within reasonable limits or should a good builder get them spot on?

size of pipe for gravity-fed shower

.....and surely the bath should still be 22mm?

size of pipe for gravity-fed shower

It works but the flow seems reduced. Surely the flow rate is reduced if the pipe volume has been reduced by 50%? Doesn't this mean I'm getting less water through in a given time?

size of pipe for gravity-fed shower

I've just had my cylinder moved to an upstairs bathroom and noticed that the plumber has changed my gravity fed shower downstairs from 22mm to 15mm pipe. Surely 22mm is a minimum requirement for a gravity fed shower?
