a faint whiff

I have an air admittance valve in my airing cupboard connected to my bath waste before it connects to my soil stack but I'm pretty sure I'm getting the faint whiff of the sewage. Surely these things only allow air in and not bad gases out? Could the valve be malfunctioning?

Thanks for your advice

Thanks guys - it's an osma vent 40 - sealed it with a plastic bag and the smell disappeared so I think I can rule out the curry scenario.
