    Sewer pipes bedding

Thanks Woody for another no-nonsense answer. Why can't my local builders be like you instead of just trying to bodge with whatever's lying around.

    Sewer pipes bedding

What sort of aggregate can I use for bedding sewer pipes. Its currently covered in 10mm pea gravel but pipe is not fully covered. Local builders only has 20mm pea gravel in stock which they can deliver in the next day or so. Is it ok to use 20mm pea gravel? Pipes are 100mm combination of...

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

Thanks for all the replies, in particular woody and oldun. The inspector actually never said anything about DPC being wrong when it was built up and it was the current builder who pointed it out at which point BCO went into military mode and demanded the whole thing to be knocked down. Went down...

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

Thanks - that makes perfect sense. At the moment I got a good brickie who is not keen on doing it and building inspector who refuses to pass it. Any thoughts on how to overcome those two?

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

They put the damp proof course a block level too low and there was some old mortar in the cavity (which was all still at least a brick height above finished floor level) which is why he asked for it to be knocked down - otherwise it was structurally sound . There were other possible ways around...

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

Woody, he's already made us drop the brickwork once and now blockwork as he wasn't happy with the work. The current builder says if he asks for to be dropped again, he doesn't want me coming to him to redo iit for free. Admittedly, there were problems with how the original builder has done the...

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

I haven't got much choice about it. I even spoke to Kingspan (and Xtratherm) and they told me what BCO says goes. I've asked him to explain and his answer was you can use what you want but if you want it to pass you'll use full fill. He feels that anything else will not be a good enough job as...

    75mm cavity & insulation materials

We have an extension with 75mm cavity which is currently being built. Because the outer skin has been built and the inner one is down, we can no longer use the part fill rigid foam insulation (building inspector won't let us). What are the options in terms of full fill insulation? Rockwool has...

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

Well building inspector said at first, stick the insulation boards on the outside then changed his mind and now insists on rockwool (he won't accept anything else). He's happy to carry on using 75mm cavity but reading the rockwool spec, we'd have to use 90mm rockwool in 105mm cavity to comply...

    Installing rigid insulation in cavity

We had to knock down inner blockwork on our extension down to floor level and rebuild it. Problem is, outer brick wall is already built so we can't easily pin rigid kingspan insulation down again with clips. What are our options now - I heard that its possible to push insulation against the...

How long to plaster an entire house

I think its going to be with hardwall. Price does include materials but like you say there is enough money there to have a labourer.

How long to plaster an entire house

We have a 4 bedroom house that needs plastering from scratch. Its an old house and the job involves floating the (bare brick) walls, boarding the ceilings, skimming the lot. Guy who was recommended gave us a price (6k) and told us that it should take less than 4 weeks. All sounded ok but now I...

    Flashing materials for rooflights

I think he's concerned that there is not enough height on the frame of the rooflight to allow for lead flashing. Apparently with lead you have to put in a certain vertical length of flashing for it to be effective - or so I am told. Alternative is to build up the frame but thats going to make...

    Flashing materials for rooflights

I've got couple of large rooflights (2.1 x 1.5m) which have to be flashed manually (no flashing kit). We have experienced local roofer doing them and he's a bit concerned with them leaking with having to be manually flashed. His concern is about flashing them with lead - he says that lead...

    Blockwork corners

Fair point Stuart, it was a long day  Anyway, the conclusion of the story is - building inspector popped round the next day, said the builder hasn't bonded corners correctly, failed them on structural and thermal and a few days later they were re-done. Different brickie though.

    Structural calcs on extension

we are having single story extension 7mx3m built with a large door and window along the long wall which are 2.75m wide each. Architect has designed it with 2 corners of 0.665m (minimum allowed to document A) and a middle pier of 0.785m wide. Building control have quite rightly failed it on...

    Blockwork corners

Not sure if this is meant by point loading but there will be a 3.2m door lintel right on top of it. Also, this whole section of the corner wall with lintel on top is only 0.665m wide to the opening.
