    Fitting Door Casings

We had a joiner fit our door casings for 12 doorways in our house - all plaster stripped off and nothing in the house but brick so it was like fitting a brand new doorways even though its an old house. All the doors we bought are 2ft6 (76cm). For some reason, while all the doors are 76cm...

Building notice & plastering an entire house

I promised to provide an update on this so here goes. Spoke to B/C and hinted that we have removed the plaster from wals. Was told that if you are removing more than 25% of the plaster, strictly speaking the work is notifiable with respect to the thermal element of the replacement used (i.e...

    Who is right?

You haven't spoken to our local duty manager. Lets just say if you did, you wouldn't come back asking for advice :). Last time I asked a question I was given answer why don't I pay someone who know what they are doing to sort it out instead of asking them. It was just 1 question (if I remember...

    Who is right?

I think its the painted brick that he was saying won't stick, not plain brick. And also on sand & cement.

    Who is right?

As mentioned before, I am having 1930s brick & lime mortar walls wet plastered and I got two different opinions on plastering and I am not sure who is right. First plasterer is telling me that he would PVA the walls then use a coat of browning and a coat of bonding (not sure in which order)...

How should reveals be done on 1930s house

I've attached a picture of one of the windows. The windows are pushed quite a bit out and the out skin is exposed. There is only cavity closer on the top - on the bottom its only a plank of wood.

Building notice & plastering an entire house

Thanks everyone for the advice which I'll take and give building control a call on Monday to discuss with them. I am not looking forward to telling plasterer that this is what I am doing. He just wants to get on and finish the job but I guess he should have told me this in the first place when...

How should reveals be done on 1930s house

Another question about reveals. We have 1930s house with 50mm cavity. The windows openings are closed with brick on the side of the window with gaps on top and bottom. The bottom gap has just a wooden window board over it, top gap has a wooden lintel above. Plasterer has closed the...

Building notice & plastering an entire house

Just to explain a bit more. We are also having an extension done although its not due to start for another month or so. Building control are involved and they have been round already to have a look around (building notice submitted). At the time, we were only planning to repair the walls but...

Building notice & plastering an entire house

They are involved in other things. Once the walls are all finished, if they come in, will they know we've redone them from scratch as opposed to just repaired and skimmed the walls?

    Reveals -should they be straight

Should the plasterboard reveals above the window be straight when first screwed in? Plasterer has done the job (only the first part) but looking at the boards, they all have twist in them and one end is slightly higher than the other at the front. They are straight on the back.

Building notice & plastering an entire house

I am having the entire house replastered - old plaster has been removed and it'll be floated with browning and bonding. Do I need to involve building control in this work? House is 1930s 50mm with brick on inside and outside.

    Insulation around windows

I am having plasterer in tomorrow to close the reveals around the windows before he starts plastering around the house. (I never heard about reveals before but I am guessing its the section of brickwork around windows). Its a 1930s house and the old plaster is off so the cavity gap is exposed...

    Extension with rooflights

Yeah, but would be nice to know where we stand before we go and speak to building inspector which is why I am asking here.

    Extension with rooflights

25 years ago someone removed the original door and window at the back of the house and added conservatory opened to dining room and kitchen at the back of the house. They didn't contact building regs and its not compliant (and wasn't at the time). We are planning to re-use foundations of this...

    Extension with rooflights

Hi, We are looking to convert conservatory at the back of a 1930s house to an extension. The size of the additional space is 7x3 meters and its been built at the back of the house opening onto the rest of the house with 2 openings size 2.5m by 2.4m (no building regs approval - previous window...

    Ethernet / phone wiring

For suggestion on running conduit to replace or add more cable later if necessary, what sort of conduit should be used? Generally speaking, whats the suitable conduit for ethernet cables to protect it getting damaged from plaster (using bonding plaster rather than boards)? Many thanks for...
