Nice one Dcdec, thanks for the tips. Just to confirm, just in case I can not find this exact one in my local B&Q, could I use any water based undercoat for wood? They do an own brand primer/undercoat which is water based.....I just want to make sue which ever one I buy the topcoat sticks to...

Appropriate undercoat for water based satin?

Hi all. I have some pre primed MDF, and some door frames that have been stripped down to bare wood. I am going to paint them with a Crown water based satin paint, and on the back it was recommended that I go over with an appropriate undercoat. I bought some Crown undercoat that stated...

    Clean new skim before painting?

Thanks a bunch Richard C....just as I assumed. I am aware of plaster getting roughed up if the sandpaper/application is wrong, I messed up on this last time. One of the ceilings has a patch repair and the plasterer has overlapped a fair bit on to the old plaster (over the join). The edges...

    Clean new skim before painting?

A quick question as I'm about to do the same. Can I give certain areas of the new plaster a light sand with fine sandpaper to remove imperfections? How quick should the mist coats go on after each other? B&Q have got small tubs of their cheap and nasty matt emulsion for ceilings going...

Stripped door frames back to bare wood, how do I prepare it?

OK, thanks for the replies so far. So could I just get an own brand B&Q waterbased primer and use that? Something like this perhaps? B&Q Quick Dry All Purpose Primer And Undercoat White Then undercoat >> topcoat? Also, this is a silly question, but will the satin topcoat...

Stripped door frames back to bare wood, how do I prepare it?

Hello all. I have recently stripped varnish and gloss off of my door frames and it is back to bare wood. I have sanded it down with a fine sandpaper. What do I do now? I have a Crown Satin topcoat, and a Crown undercoat. Do I still need to prime the wood? If so, would an MDF primer...

Advice on how to paint a large ceiling.

Think it's a regular 9". Don't need a pole as I'm quite tall and the ceiling is low. Yeah I am hoping the Floetrol will thin it properly as opposed to just adding water. When you say to 'roller it out until it is uniform', what do you mean?Keep rolling until there is no paint left on the...

Advice on how to paint a large ceiling.

I've not had the problem with any other ceilings but they are much smaller. This is just one very large surface area that isn't broken up in any way. The additive is supposed to help reduce brush/roller marks by making the paint more workable and increasing the drying time, helping keep...

I am! Gow about something like Floetrol....does anyone have any experience with this....perhaps this will help keep a wet edge?

Advice on how to paint a large ceiling.

Hi Nochancers. Thanks for the reply. Initially it was new plaster but isn't anymore, it has had a few coats now. I am using standard white matt paint, Wickes Trade I think. I was going width to width and doing a square metre at a time but by the time I got to the second run it had...

Advice on how to paint a large ceiling.

Hello all. My living room ceiling is around 24 sqaure metres big. I am painting it, but I am noticing you can see clear overlap marks on each new run. Does anyone have any tips on how to attain a nice, flat and even finish? Many thanks.

Oh right, I understand. Thanks for the suggestion but I am going to have to give repainting a miss as I've just spent a fortune on the paint already!

    Polyvine Decorators Varnish (paint protection)

Well I'll try to clean it first. May as well if I'm going to repaint it (£21 for a tin of paint I am going to use a cupful of :( ) I'll buy a small bottle of the Polyvine and test it first to see if I like it, if not I'll stick it back up on ebay! Thanks for the help.....I'll update this...

    Polyvine Decorators Varnish (paint protection)

Thanks for the response jondecs. The paint I used was the Crown Period range, not cheap, so repainting with a new paint is not an option. To be honest, I really like matt for walls, I prefer the shinier paints in bathrooms/kitchens only. Unfortunately this one is not touching up well...

    Polyvine Decorators Varnish (paint protection)

Hello all. I have recently finished painting my stairway/hallway in a Crown Flat Matt paint. Already I have noticed a couple of fingerprints which really show up on the colour so I am worried about what it will look like in weeks to come. It is a narrow, high traffic area so the walls are...

    Easy Surface Primer (ESP)...

OK, cheers guys. I have tried a little sanding and there is no hint of peeling or anything, seems tightly bonded so it should be OK. I'm going to give the Easy Sander/ESP stuff a miss. Thanks again.

    Easy Surface Primer (ESP)...

Thanks alot for the reply.... You're right, the truth is I cannot be bothered as this was supposed to be a quick, small job and has turned into something else....I still might give it a go as some people have had success with it but we'll see.... I understand it's just a light sand that is...

    Easy Surface Primer (ESP)...

...has anyone got any experience with this? It is meant to prime shiny surfaces for painting so that the paint will stick (like tiles, or already glossed surfaces). I have also read about International Wipe on Surface primer..... Can anyone speak for their efficiency? Thanks alot.
