Hello all.

I have recently finished painting my stairway/hallway in a Crown Flat Matt paint.

Already I have noticed a couple of fingerprints which really show up on the colour so I am worried about what it will look like in weeks to come. It is a narrow, high traffic area so the walls are going to get touched.

I understand cleaning these dead flat matt type of paints is difficult. So I am thinking of perhaps sealing it some way.

I've come across the aforementioned product whilst doing some research.

They do a flat matt range....what I want to know is if anyone here has any experience with them and how well they work.

I don't want the walls to have a shine to them, so I'm hoping the flat matt range they do will not do this.....but they are expensive products so I'd like to know more about them before I buy.

Also, if anyone has any tips on cleaning matt paint that would be most welcome.

Thanks for reading.

polvine good stuff but pricey. the matt will still give a very slight sheen. may be better to just keep some of the paint and touch up. The matt emulsions usually touch up well.

Or go for a soft sheen? The expensive dulux diamond (allegedly) matt paint has quite a shine. I find soft sheen just as good as they all get knocked. scuffed.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response jondecs.

The paint I used was the Crown Period range, not cheap, so repainting with a new paint is not an option. To be honest, I really like matt for walls, I prefer the shinier paints in bathrooms/kitchens only.

Unfortunately this one is not touching up well and you can see the new paint on top of the old.

So I was thinking of repainting the wall again and only using the Polyvine on a small area where there is going to be most abuse....

But as you said there is a slight shine to it, I don't want adjacent walls looking different to the ones that have been varnished....

So now I'm not sure. Polyvine do a dead flat version and it is sold on ebay. Perhaps the seller can tell me more about it's level of sheen....

If only there was an effective way of cleaning finger marks off matt paint but a google search suggests it is not easy.

yes matt is the best.
Regarding cleaning; I forgot to write ; If you get a damp rag and just apply a little 'ciff' and very gently wipe over the finger mark taking care not to rub hard or u wil buff the paint and it will shine. sometimes works.

to be honest mate, i`d take the soft sheen option. it doesn`t have much shine to it and it is wipeable . especially in high traffic areas.
i used dulux diamond matt on my staircase and oil based eggshell under the dado rail and you can`t tell which is which, so the dulux does have quite a bit of shine to it.
its basically matt emulsion with diamond glaze mixed it. and it will flash if your not a very fast painter
i`ve also used the the soft sheen in the kitchen and conservatory and i really like it.
it really doesn`t have much of a shine to it

Well I'll try to clean it first. May as well if I'm going to repaint it (£21 for a tin of paint I am going to use a cupful of :( ) I'll buy a small bottle of the Polyvine and test it first to see if I like it, if not I'll stick it back up on ebay!

Thanks for the help.....I'll update this thread in case anyone wants to know how well it works....

Nok1, thanks for the reply but I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to. Are you talking about a different paint, or the Polyvine?

sorry mate, i`m agreeing with jondecs about using soft sheen, instead of polyvine

Oh right, I understand. Thanks for the suggestion but I am going to have to give repainting a miss as I've just spent a fortune on the paint already!
