    Part P courses

LABC sounds the plan then, but thanks for all the information here, very interesting. Maybe a career change one day... :)

    Part P courses

Ok, LABC = local BCO Maybe they mean, it will allow you to have the knowledge to do the work to part P requirments but youll still need to call LABC. Do LABC do the inspection or do you pay them and then get someone to inspect it for you after (prob fill some LABC forms out), and maybe...

    Part P courses

Here a bit of the course description of the site, which if I read it correct gave me the impression you could self cert. Not sure who is LABC (will have a look) but doign a course may be overkill for some people.

    Part P Qualification

You dont need to do all that just for Part P compliance from what I can see. Obviously youll need to buy some test kit after but that wont cost much. e.g: my local college: http://www.bridgend.ac.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=430&Itemid=152 EAL Certificate for Domestic...

    Part P courses

The only thing that concerns me about Part P is house insurance. I do not see the point in asking a insurance company because of course they would say that all work must be cert'ed. As long as I am happy that any work I done is safe (and I would make sure I have thoroughly read up on anything...

    Part P and all that

I will read this later but I would of thought (no expert!) even moving/removing a socket could be a risky thing ?. I guess im swaying off the OP a bit here surely if the ring is broken by a bad termination at the join then the current capacity is reduced below the fuse protection and surely...

    Testing wires are not live.

I will try to remain serious here :) Fluke is very nice but a mains neon screwdriver is a nice easy way (and at least do this!) Test it on a live wire to see it works and then use that. This means less you can find live and stay alive :D

    Part P and all that

Just interested to know, because even where I work (a school) I have seen work done but probably uncerted people. I have seen a whole room done out and a new circuit put in (I helped the guy) he was college qualified but doubt that is enough!? (depends who exactly he is qualified with I think) I...

    Part P and all that

Who are the techno boys? When you say dodgy work do you mean: work that has been done that has caused a problem OR a search for any uncert'd work ever been done in the house before?

    Part P and all that

Are there any courses you can go on to become legal in doing anything that comes under this regulation? Does this anyone know of this effecting house insurance? ie. If I had something done in the house by a sparky and never seen them again and couldnt remember who they were is that not to...

how do i test for earth ?

I havent done any testing of the earth yet but I presume you mean the OP although everything here he will find useful. My lack-of bonding is here Underbath earth bonding http://www.zen44027.zen.co.uk/DSCN0650.JPG http://www.zen44027.zen.co.uk/DSCN0653.JPG Ok what exactly (dont want to...

how do i test for earth ?

I got a nice analogue meter with zeroing control. Does this mean that there is not 'load' test if you see what I mean?

    faulty swich possibly

yeh but that would be acceptable after a few pints in the local pub :)

how do i test for earth ?

I would of thought that a basic test is to test continuity (ie. near zero ohms on the multi) between the pipes and a nearby earth point (ie. an earth prong on a socket). But saying that I know it is possible to get a low-ohm reading on a wire when its nearly broken or wouldnt stand up to any...

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

I would like a new CU, in fact I was looking at them in Wickes the other day, although I wouldnt of bought one then and there without a bit of research. But to be honest, although I dont anticipate any problems in doing it, I am not certified and wouldnt know how-to or have the equipment to...

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

I guess im a fussy or something as I think it should have a main fuse to protect the CU itself. Im just thinking it did have a cooker on it (not anymore) and a shower and if they were all on full blast and a few other things, quite unlikely but possible, then that could occur. Yeh some...

    Consumer unit fuseway / ring-main

So what would happen if a situation occured that came close or exceed the 60A. Im assuming that the CU just gets hot/warm if close to it and the main fuse (outside) will go, as in the electric company match their fuse with the CU? Its difficult to imagine how id get up to that current (I...
